Description This is the prototype of my first official set of tools designed specifically for stamping patterns on polymer clay, precious metal clay, or even ceramics.
Named in honor of my DA friend, =ValerianaSolaris (who will also soon be the first to field test the stamps before they go into production), it is a thirty-eight piece smorgasbord of delicate designs.
There are twenty-five individual 'bar' type stamps (2" long by various widths from 1/4" up to 1/2"), twelve 'button' stamps, and a 2" x 3" flat ' push-mold'.
The stamps were machined from 1/2" clear acrylic sheet and the push-mold from 3/16" sheet. The machining was performed on a 3-axis CNC router and took almost three hours to complete. Most likely, the production models will be either cast or injection-molded in order to hold down the cost.

Unique, beautiful and highly detailed, great talent here. Can't wait to order a production set.

Thanks for the lavish praise! I'm still searching for an economical way to produce the stamps. Photopolymer (the clear rubbery stamps) don't seem to leave as crisp an impression, cast-resin is a bit messy, and injection-molding is expensive to get started. I'll certainly try to notify you as soon as I get something going.

Thanks so much for the kind comments. Yes, Valeriana is a charming (and talented) gal. She has given me a lot of great feedback on this project as well.

Thanks for the enthusiastic comment (and the fave...and the watch!). I'm hoping to be able to market at least some of these stamps this summer. Stay tuned for details!

I'm stunned - that's awesome
I'm fan of valeriana's works and I read in her journal about your work - brilliant
I work with polymer clay too, and I haven't found stamps that would please me enough
but yours are fantastic - really beautiful for backgrounds - are you gonna sell them some time soon?

is this router some kind of 3d-printer, 'cause I saw similar work at my university

Thanks for the enthusiastic compliments, Claudia! Glad you enjoyed the stamp designs. I am still exploring ways to economically produce the stamps, but the plan is to market either sets or single stamps (including custom-designed specialty stamps) sometime this summer.
The CNC router is more of a computer-controlled cutting machine than a 3d-printer. We employ them at my work to cut shapes for signs using a variety of plastics, metals, and woods. I draw my designs on a computer, then engrave those patterns into the acrylic with a series of very fine bits. Other patterns [link] are done by hand with a Dremel tool.
Stay tuned for updates and info on availability.

you're welcome
I really envy valeriana for she could pre-test your stamps
but I agree with her that silicone stamps would be better than acrylic ones because they're flexible and one could use them on rounded subjects
so you design a prototype with dremel tools first, or do you send it directly to that cnc router?
you can bet I stay tuned that're great art supplies you're designing there and how could anyone walk by

savageworlds In reply to seed-of-january [2009-06-06 18:31:57 +0000 UTC]

My design process starts on the computer and goes directly to the cnc router (or laser in some cases), although I do also create some of the 'freehand' designs solely with the dremel tool. When I get some silicone samples ready, remind me to send you a few. As with Valeriana, you can give me some feedback on how well they work (or suggestions on what to change)

OMG I cannot believe it - that's so amazingly nice of you
I'd love to be your tester
my designs starts on paper and work their way up into the computer are you designing some new patterns or do you use the 'old' ones for the silicone stamps? maybe you could add a frosty pattern like ice crystals on windows

savageworlds In reply to seed-of-january [2009-06-06 20:44:15 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome. It is the least I could do after all of your enthusiasm. I will probably do a a combination of older and newer designs for the silicone prototypes. I like the ice crystal idea. I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh, Tom, you are a sweetheart I feel so honored these lovely pieces carry my name
I noticed you dropped some of the previous designs, especially those from the lower rows which look a bit yellowish and round. Some of those looked really tempting!

The buttons stamps look great!!

savageworlds In reply to ValerianaSolaris [2009-05-06 21:21:14 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome! Actually, just about every pattern from the original test-run are represented in this set. The only difference being that, instead of putting multiple patterns on one long stick, I put each pattern on its own two-inch stamp. The rounded, yellowish pieces in the first posting are simply pieces of baked Super Sculpey that I stamped to give an example of the finished product.
Of course, by combining several stamps on a small piece of clay, you could turn the clay itself into a unique stamping tool. The possibilities would be endless.

This looks great ! So sorry I cannot help you, unless you want to deal with someone more lousy than you are when it comes to financial aspects.
But I am ( usually ) technically sensible.
The costly part making the matrix should be on a hard material, like it was done for matrix of letters before offset process. Then molded and the mold used to produce useable sample in a cheaper and easier material, it was lead alliage in the printing process ( and was recycled when no longer neat) but here polymer clay or some plastic is probably the good idea here. Alginate is a good material for molds, and can be home processed, a friend has done it ( he made a mold of his own head, the crazy one ! )
The patterns looks great ! Celtic patterns to make batik on silk would be a great hit I am sure. Or hand stamped paperwall for rich people since it was made this way in the first ages of wall paper.
I wish you the best of luck.

savageworlds In reply to Aspartam [2009-05-05 11:23:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I may try the low-tech approach at first (alginate or silicone mold to make resin-cast parts), just to see what I can do myself. The lead type analogy is a good one. Thanks for the suggestions! (and thanks for the fave, too!)

Thanks, Dmitri! I have dozens more design ideas (including some hand-carved pieces) Just trying to find a way to get them mass-produced. Right now, it would cost around $250 to produce them the way I just did. Sadly, I may have to look overseas to find an economical manufacturer.
