Charismatic | Intuitive | Argumentative and Stubborn | Opportunistic | Resentful | Selfless
Ori's entire sense of self is a direct result of the events in her life. Being born into nothing, she knew very well she needed to take a hold of every opportunity presented to her. What was once a conscious effort is now so ingrained into her being she's no longer aware of it. Her mother credits it for Ori taking the plunge to become a Champion. That and her bullheadedness. Ori refuses to fail at anything she sets her mind to, often running herself into the ground to achieve her goals. If she isn't in sole control of the outcome of a situation, she sure as hell argues with anyone else who is until she gets her way. She won't take no for an answer for anything she deems reasonable.
Despite her rather gruff appearance, Ori is about as selfless as they come. She couldn't always help those close to her when they needed it the most, so now that she can, nothing can stop her. She feels like it can make up for all the times she couldn't. Even when she's as busy as she is, she still makes time to check up on old friends.
Life as a Champion was not something she fell into naturally, other than fighting. In the beginning, that was the only thing she was good at. The charisma and intuition came later, with practice. She was accustomed to working behind the scenes, never needing to do more than haggle for a good profit for a pit fighter. Now in the spotlight herself. navigating society sharpened her wits into as deadly a weapon as any choice of swords.

Summary Ori only had her struggling mother in the beginning, but life improved immensely after she married a successful merchant. The happiness didn't last long as he was quickly reduced to nothing but a drunkard that only came around to ask for money. He eventually got himself executed for assaulting a noble while drunk. Ori and her mother managed for a while after, but then all the personal slaves were thrown to the labor force. Ori's only income was yanked from her, leaving her with nothing. All she had to offer was her physical prowess. Ori made the risky yet lucrative leap to become a Champion and fill the void the absent pit fighters left to support her now ill mother and four younger siblings.
Birth & Childhood
- To say Orias was born into a stable and loving home would be an incredible stretch. Her mother did everything she could to provide for Ori, but after being estranged from her family and left to rot in darkest corners of the commoner’s district with no means to provide for herself and her newborn daughter, she had nowhere to turn to. Work was hard to come by. As much as she struggled, she never allowed Ori to see how much she suffered. Ori, too young to understand why exactly her mother refused to eat most nights, lived in a blissful ignorance for the first few years of her life. As far as Ori was concerned, things only got better after her mother married a fairly wealthy merchant. For a while, even her mother looked happier, healthier. Ori even got some new siblings to take under her wing. After so many years of her world only consisting of her and her mother, Ori was ecstatic to finally have what she considered to be a proper family.
Adolescence
- The drinking started just after Ori started her apprenticeship. No one suspected anything when her stepfather came home late smelling of wine a couple of days a week. It was strange he didn’t do so earlier. What was once a casual drink quickly spiraled out of control in a matter of a few years. There were nights her never returned home, leaving Ori’s mother sick with worry, only to be found passed out in some alleyway the next morning. He was a loud, violent drunk, that was often escorted home by chevaliers if he didn’t pass out beforehand.
Ori was ignorant to all of this. She spent every waking moment working under a slave trader. It was nothing exciting at first, helping train the servile slaves, but as soon as she was old enough (and big enough) to hold her own against those destined to become pit fighter, Ori really came into her own. It was apparent she had a knack for unlocking the best in each fighter. The same slave trader she learned under hired her immediately. He didn’t want to lose the pretty penny she earned him over the past few years, and he couldn’t imagine it if she was to become his competitor. The steady income couldn’t come soon enough. Ori’s stepfather was dumping everything into drinking. His once lucrative business was reduced to a few loyal and sympathetic costumers that only purchased his stock with the hope that Ori’s mother would get ahold of the money instead. Even they were quickly vanishing, along with their money. It was only after her husband started staying out drinking more often than not did Ori’s mother beg her to move back home. Ori was furious her stepfather could allow her mother to struggle once again when she’s already suffered so much, only this time, Ori could actually be of help to her mother.
Adulthood
- Life went on whether or not Ori’s stepfather was home to see it. While Ori and her mother worked themselves to the bone to care for the younger kids, her stepfather only ever showed his face when he needed money. Ori, preferring to have him out of her hair than at home moping around, gladly gave it to him. Neither of them had the heart to tell her. Despite their rather complicated relationship, Ori and her stepfather agreed never to hurt her mother like that. Only the trouble he eventually got himself into hurt her so much more than anything else could have.
Nothing seemed amiss when Ori found a pair of chevaliers at the door. Normally they’d come and tell her where her stepfather passed out for the night, and if he was anywhere inconvenient, to collect him at her earliest convenience. This time, however, there was to be no collecting him. The story is he somehow managed to find himself in the wealthier area of Valore and stumbled into a noble heading home from a party. Literally. He then got angry at said noble for getting in his way and attacked them with the broken wine bottle in his hand. Ori didn’t doubt it for a second. Not a soul in their family did. They all witnessed his decline first hand. A thing like this was only a matter of time. Ori’s mother was devastated nonetheless. Still, none of them attended his execution. He had wasted enough of their time. At least that’s how Ori saw it.
Life moves on, and everyone with it. Ori was making good money now. A lot of the pit fighters she trained were proving successful in the ring and the demand for them was high. She enjoyed her work, giving the slaves that came into her possession a real fighting chance and a much bigger say in their fate. So she was one of the ones hit hardest after Isador claimed all personal slaves for the labor force. Her life’s work reduced to ashes with only a few words, but she didn’t have the time to be angry. The stress hardships Ori’s mother endured were taking a toll on her health, and she was getting sicker faster than they could afford. She needed to find new work, and fast. That’s when she heard the whispers of citizens fighting in the ring. It seemed odd, almost too good to really be true. She knew first hand just how lucrative pit fighting was, even if she only had a small part of what the industry had to offer. She trained countless pit fighters, many of which went on to become profitable winners. Her combat skills were all she had to offer. That’s all she needed to take the leap.
Ori certainly wasn’t the flashiest fighter, but she was consistent, consistent enough to allow her to keep fighting while she learned the more theatrical tricks of the trade. Yes, she came home battered and bruised and utterly exhausted, but it was worth it. She could afford the medicine her mother so desperately needed. It was finally Ori’s turn to take care of her mother.
