Description Sorry, but I'm seriously fed up. Just browsing through the humorous sections of deviantART and all I find infront of me is "art" using copyrighted material without any kind of permission.

It's unfair for me and for all the others that are trying to do it the right way. It would be soooo easy for me to take a screencap from Twilight or use some art from Hetalia (that seems to be very trendy lol) and just block the people telling me that I'm a thief blah blah blah...

Damn. There's so much free stock out there that is just waiting to be used, awesome material that is going to waste because people take the easy -and frankly, illegal - way.

I feel like I'm becoming a bit of a hater but against who? Against people that believe deviantART is just a picture hosting site?

That's not all I have to say but it makes me sad that nothing is going to change unless deviantART staff takes action, something I doubt will ever happen...

I don't usually use DA pics as backgrounds or whatnot, I figured I'd get caught..except the stock of course. I also don't know who cares about a holiday picture of a landscape used as background in a pic they'll never find or hear of..What's more, I haven't really seen a lot of stolen stuff used here..but then I haven't been looking for it.
Big-ass hollywood productions is something else. Kinda encouraging to steal stuff from, knowing how much money they make! Unfortunately,it wont make them lose any(whatever they try convincing you..()).....oh well..

Well, truth is that DA is full of stolen stuff and I don't just mean plain copyright violations (anime, movies, screenshots, etc). A few months ago were the reports of art being sold in galleries, art that belongs to DA members but that's just the tip of the iceberg. You see, right now a mob mentality is growing in deviantART and it's like " Everybody does it" and if it goes on, deviantART will have to massively delete what I think it's about 5% of the content submitted here. I know that 5% sounds like a small figure but imagine that we're talking about a 5% of millions

I get so tired of all the people on dA who treat it like another Photobucket and clog up all the search results with screen caps and other official artwork. The same problem exists in the fanart sections as well because it's almost impossible to find anything good buried under the mountains of shitty re-draws of screen caps and official artwork. I don't understand why people upload that crap... the original is always better.

I wish more people would actually use stock images for their demotivationals... then again I wish more people would make demotivationals that are actually funny, too. 99.9% of them are just stupid.

look man, I won't hide behind my finger because I'm not the type to do so. It's kind of personal to me you see...these people are giving a bad name to what I'm trying to do and it's drawing negative attention towards me. I even found myself "listed" in an anti-art theft group for no reason just because I'm doing posters and somebody thought that "hey, they are all using stolen stuff, he must be using too", without even taking a look and see that my posters are made from proper stocks

The next step against them won't be aiming the creators but their viewers and I'm seriously going after them with no-remorse of what happens next

The worst are the many people which view, coment and fave a stupid picture with a harry potter screenshot as example and a line below it

Almost everyday we see a few of those on the front page but hey..this is DA..there isnt something like a copyright or quality check here..

i did something already. Just a small thing but its good for me, some artists and fans

The situation here on DA was a big reason i build up an own website where i myself take care on the copyright and quality stuff. People cant upload pictures there by themselfes for now..its just a website for fan art of video games..and only for those which are outstanding from the masses [link] i ask artists which impressed me with their works for their permission to use them, i add links to their own websites or DA profiles..in the end its a win/win/win situation for the artist, for me and for fans since it means visitors for me and the artists and it means quality for the game and art fans

HappyHateDay In reply to Sc1r0n [2011-10-14 21:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Art theft is when they use another art and claim it as their own. Anything else is fine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sc1r0n In reply to HappyHateDay [2011-10-14 21:07:45 +0000 UTC]

No it's not fine and it's not me saying it. It's deviantART. You can't just take a screenshot of a film and use it anywhere even if you don't claim it as your own. This material is copyrighted and you simply don't have the permission to use it. Not even for personal use, nothing. You see, the laws that deviantART is under are pretty damn strict and because people are too bored to even read them, they are lead to believe whatever suits them best. This has to change.

Too bad there's no "like" button (Ala facebook) besides adding your pic and your comments to my fave gallery. I tend to roll my eyes when I see someone who's done a screen capture from a movie, put a "frame" on it, maybe throw a few typed in words over it, and call it their own art! *thunking head on nearest hard surface* However, I was thinking about the last comment from Kiitaira, and I think if it's something that came from your OWN HEAD, putting the characters in a new situation, that should be okay, and even then, maybe only using a capture tool for reference. Oops, sorry for the long comment lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Sc1r0n In reply to Aquardial [2011-10-14 06:48:30 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I love having nice conversations in the comment sections of my submissions Well, it doesn't matter what you do with the characters if you don't have permission to use them. It's not like they are doing fan art. They are using the art exactly as it is from the original artist. If that's ok to them, why not take the whole manga series and re-write all the dialogs and just give it out as their own work just saying (hey this guy did the drawing and everything). That's like spitting in the face of the original artist .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aquardial In reply to Sc1r0n [2011-10-14 13:02:39 +0000 UTC]

That IS the best point. I don't have an opinion on anything manga (or anything related to that style), for even though that seems to be the most popular method of drawing, I really don't care for it. I read a lot, and when I find an artist who's taken a picture from their OWN head and translated it to paper - disregarding any movie that may have been made - I want to give them a standing ovation! It may not be what I saw in MY head, but the fact that he or she made the effort...to me, that's true art! Sure, the characters are still copyrighted by the author, but it doesn't seem as great of a violation. Or is that just wishful thinking too? :-P

Kiitaira [2011-10-14 01:47:27 +0000 UTC]

Can I just say that you sir are awesome? Recently I was thinking about DA and the reason for why people join it. There are FAQs and policies set in place to try and prevent people from stealing art and illegally using images without proper permission, and yet people do it anyway.
I think of DA as a place for artists of all kinds to submit their own work and get helpful/positive feedback for their work. At least, that's why I'm here. So when they violate those FAQs/policies, I wonder, what do they expect to gain from it?

Also, and I'm sorry I wrote so much, but what do you think when people propose the idea that fanart may be considered art theft itself?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sc1r0n In reply to Kiitaira [2011-10-14 06:44:53 +0000 UTC]

First of all, thank you so much for your kind comment Second, no, not all fan art is a copyright violation because many manga artists even allow re-colouring of their pieces, what is not allowed in fanart (and in many kinds of art in general) is tracing. You can't just go ahead and use the lineart like you did it yourself. You can try and draw it by refference but you can't do it exactly as it is because the original drawing belongs to the artist that did it. More than that, many of the "original" manga/anime artist encourage their viewers and fans to make such things because of course it's free advertizing on their part. It's smart. If you have the internet flooded with fanart pieces of your work you are bound all these people to redirect attention to you

Kiitaira In reply to Sc1r0n [2011-10-15 00:07:41 +0000 UTC]

You are very welcome. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this to me, it was very helpful insight.

One other thing, when people take screen shots and make motivational posters out of them, are those considered copyrighted as well?(Depending on whether they were allowed to use the them without needing proper permission in some cases, though.) I talked to so many people about this within the last week. I was told that because it was something that they "made", it was ok and not considered art theft. So now I'm all confused with that.
