Description In some country areas there is this stupid tradition of nailing owls to the barn doors in order to keep back the devil and ill luck. Probably it is still done in some places. Not sure how it is done in reality, but I got this idea of an owl nailed by the wings, as it reminds a lot of a cruficied human.

Painted in gouache on canvas. Preliminary sketches and painting process details can be found on my blog:

Fools! They have no idea that Owls are declining in numbers. Although, there numbers go up and down.

It's still done, but it seems more for sheer cruelty. I read about the case of a little female which was so tortured; luckily, a member of a Society against animal cruelty rescued her. regrettably, the poor bird, a female named Lolotte, never could fly again, so she was kept as the group's pet.
The sweetest creature you could ever imagine, Lolotte loved to perch on people's shoulders or on the armrests of couches and she was truly happy when anyone let her land on his (her) bosom. There, poor, sweet Lolotte curled to sleep; she snored (!) but I'm sure it was a really delightful sound for those who rescued her.

Sadly I'm not surprised to hear this, though it sounds like some dumbass kid having "fun" rather than a superstitious ritual. Glad she has survived though. I've worked at a bird shelter this summer and there was a barn owl too, but that one was the fiercest and angriest bird I've ever seen, it would not be so easy to nail him.

I think it was indeed a case of cruelty.

I read that Lolotte's case occurred in France.

The photo I found was from Sweden I think, but it used to happen in several other places where barn owls are found. I haven't found very precise information. Owls were related to witches and devils in many parts of old Europe though.

Owls have longed been feared as harbingers of death by different peoples, very sad really, not heard of the nailing before.

It's true...they nailed them with their wings spread out, and it IS very much like a crucifixion, even if they were already dead when nailed there. This horrible custom started in Rome and persisted into the 19th century.

My lovely friend: I feel so compelled to cry... this is horrible... poor creatures... they are really our night guardians... I myself feel so happy when I hear their screech at nights! I always sleep better those nights... I always pray their hunt is successful.

I hope they enjoyed their rat invasions + black plague when they ran out of owls.

I guess they just didn't care much... later they got overrun by mice and didn't know why.
