Lavender dodges as Kenton throws his head back, narrowly missing knocking out her teeth. She digs her nails into his arm and keeps dragging him backwards, until they’re finally in the kitchen. Despite her arms being preoccupied with the captive and his thrashing, Lavender manages to scoot out a chair from the dining room table with her foot, and throws Kenton into it as soon as she can. With his ankles bound together and his wrists lashed behind his back, he really shouldn’t be this difficult to manage. She grabs a coil of rope from the cardboard box on the counter and scrabbles to find the loose end. Before Kenton can to wiggle himself out of the chair, she throws the rope over his chest and around the back of the chair. If it
weren’t for that blindfold, Kenton would've been halfway out of the kitchen already.

The rope tangles easily in Lavender’s rookie hands, but somehow she’s wrapped it around the captive and the chair just enough to secure him there for the time being. Kenton jerks his arms and huffs.

“You going to calm down now?” Lavender asks, crossing her arms.

“Fuck you. Untie me. Fuck you.”

“You don’t even know what I’m doing.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve got enough sense to know that it can’t be good.”

Lavender goes over to the stove. With a few clicks of the ignition mechanism, she turns on one of the burners and grabs a frying pan.

“I’m making lunch, dumbass.”

Kenton falls silent. Lavender rolls her eyes, and opens the fridge for some butter and eggs, if Mateo’s got any. Luckily, he does. Must've gone shopping for groceries just before bringing her in on this assignment.

“You want a grilled cheese sandwich? Or an omelette? Or what?”

Kenton is still silent, but perks up after a moment. “Can I have both?”

Lavender shrugs and checks to make sure she has enough ingredients.

“Sure.” She grabs some plates and utensils and gets to work. It’s been a while since she’s cooked, or really took the time to prepare food of any sort. Surviving on stale chips and powdered kool-aid for months was really the best she could do. Once upon a time, she actually liked to get up early to make a whole breakfast and more.

Kenton coughs. “So what’s- what’s the occasion, huh?” His suspicion will never die down.

“There’s literally nothing else to do besides take those damn pictures. Take a nap, watch TV, punch you in the face, take another nap, that’s it.”

“The alternative to punching me in the face… is making me lunch?”

“Or whatever this is. Could be breakfast, could be dinner, I’m not checking the clock.”

“And wait. Wait a second. You’re watching TV?”

“There aren’t a lot of channels.”

“... Can I watch TV?”

“Blindfold,” Lavender reminds him.

Kenton shakes his head begrudgingly. “Why am I even blindfolded?”

Lavender pauses. “Y’know, I’m not sure. Mateo never told me.”

“I was never blindfolded until just before you came around.”

“Wait, really?” Lavender flips the omelette and glances over her shoulder to take a look at him. He’s still squirming a little. He shakes his head.

“It must have something to do with you.”

Huh. If she had to guess, it was probably Mateo’s way of making things easier on her.

“Motherfucker ain’t all that confident that I can handle a chicken-legged stoner all by myself,” she grumbles under her breath.

“What?”

“I said you’re a miserable little bastard. Your omelette’s ready.” Lavender slides it onto a plate and sets it in front of Kenton.

Now, Kenton can’t do much, with his hands bound behind his back, and his eyes covered. Lavender knows this. Up to this point, she’s fed him everything from her hand, but she doesn’t want to do that shit anymore. Lavender grabs a knife from a drawer and a pair of handcuffs from the cardboard box. She fastens one cuff around his still-bound wrist, cuts the rope, brings his hands to the front, and cuffs the other wrist. Impressively, she didn’t even fumble that much, and it was quick enough that Kenton didn’t get a good chance to escape or anything.
The captive starts to reach up, to remove the blindfold, but Lavender grabs his wrists before he can even touch it.

“Leave it on.” The strength of her grip alone is enough to convince him. He lowers his hands.

Lavender turns away to get a fork for his omelette. On second thought, a spoon would be better. She places it in his hand and guides him to his plate.

“You still want that grilled cheese?” Lavender asks, turning back to the stove. Kenton’s already stuffing his face with the omelette. He manages to grunt “mm-hmm” in between gulps. Lavender wipes down the pan on the stove and starts buttering some bread. She’ll make her own meal after Kenton’s is done. After swallowing a huge bite, Kenton slows down.

“Why are you being nice all of a sudden?” he asks after a cautious pause.

“Don’t read into it, man.” The sizzle in the pan hisses like a snake. Lavender pokes the sandwich with the spatula. “I’m hungry and bored. And I miss cooking.”

“Whatever. I don't trust you.” Kenton finishes his omelette with a few more huge bites. But then, something dawns on him.

“Oh my god, you- did you drug my food?!” Kenton pushes his empty plate away and goes for his blindfold again, all up in arms all of a sudden. Lavender’s eyes widen, and she lunges at him before he can remove the cloth from his face. She grabs the chains of the handcuffs in one hand and his face in the other, shouting at him. He doesn’t stop fighting.

“No, I didn’t drug your food! Jesus Christ, calm down and listen to me!” Her fingers press into his cheek to the point where he squeaks in pain and holds still.

“I didn’t drug your food.”

“I don’t… trust you,” Kenton pants. Lavender groans.

“What, you want me to prove it?”

He nods. She looks to the stove. Kenton’s sandwich is almost ready. Lavender grabs another pair of cuffs from that cardboard box, attaches them to the leg of the chair and then to the captive’s cuffs, and goes for the frying pan. She snatches up the sandwich and takes a bite. It’s still burning hot, but it doesn't matter to Lavender. She smacks Kenton upside the head.

“There’s nothing in it. Nothing in the omelette, nothing in the sandwich. Nothing,” she growls. Kenton finally nods, accepting she’s telling the truth. She shoves him back and leans against the counter, resentfully eating his stupid sandwich. He’s hunched over with his fists clenched.

“Why the fuck would I drug you?” Lavender demands.

Kenton shakes his head. “Mateo used to. A lot. All the time. Constantly.”

Lavender stares. “Why?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know. It was hell,” he says, his voice now weak. Lavender thinks she recognizes that look on his face. She returns to the stove again. Starts buttering some more bread. Kenton furrows his brow.

“... What are you doing now?”

“Making another sandwich. Unless you’re not hungry anymore.”

Kenton straightens up slowly. “I’m- I’m still hungry.”
