I made a collaboration with one of my friends and fellow artist I share a studio with: ~OdinoirActually we started two parallel collabs and swapped every now and then. We agreed on the theme Low Fantasy Legends and started Basil Poledouris Conan soundtrack.
The first one is Michael Moorcock´s Elric of Melniboné slashing his way through some 70ies purple heavy metal demons.
I´ll post the second one tomorrow.

I found about Moorcock when I saw the Corum Series. I bought all of them and swallowed all the books very fast.
Good writing and very interesting to read.
Such art inspires to continue to read his novels, and to draw more.

I grew up reading all of Michael Moorcock's novels, especially the Eternal Champion Cycle including the Elric Saga... and this painting certainly captures a lot of what I remember of the action from those stories. The doomed, brooding albino emperor with his vampiric, demon-possessed black sword Stormbringer fighting against the forces of the Lords of Chaos. Epic stuff! You've captured that look I always pictured him having during his battle madness too, when he'd yell out: "Arioch! Blood and souls for my lord Arioch!" and the whole scene has an appropriately hellish atmosphere to it. A nice heavy metal vibe indeed! A great painting, which took me back to those stories I loved so much. Thanks for that!

the conan sound track is perfect for getting art done. it's like the fantasy artist's montage music.

True. I listen to that pretty often.
And when drawing SciFi art the old Robocop and starship troopers soundtracks also by the brilliant Poledouris would be the matching music.

You remember correctly, Elric was more thin and enough so that without the Black Sword he'd have died on numerous occasions. However, he'd have to have had some measure of muscle just to be able to wear the plate armor he had on in the first novel and wield a two-handed sword with some degree of skill, such as the weapon he had before he got Stormbringer. So, given that, this isn't all that off. It's a tricky balance to strike, doing Elric true to the novels whilst also making him realistic and believable.

Btw I don't know Moorcock. I just meant the image in general. That contradiction I felt in my eyes makes it interesting.

Really love this one - I also think the torso looks really odd because you can see some of it's front while you can also see most of it's back. Your use of color though amazes me and I love the movement! This really jumps at you!
What drew me to the image though is how it kinda contradicts what I think of as low fantasy (not much magic use / set in the real world)

The Torso is far from perfect but I´m glad the colors balance that out.
I just read the english low fantasy article on wikipedia (not much magic use / set in the real world) and it contradicts the german one where basically low fantasy and high fantasy are defined as Conan vs Lord of the Rings(A less meticulously described world/more ambivalent heroes/pulp magazine tradition).
So either the terms really have a different meaning in english and german or one of the articles is simply wrong.
Hm, so that´s what happens if one relies too much on wikipedia...

I tend to look at geeky sites and discussions for that, but some of their info probably comes from wikipedia too XD And usually it's hard for people to agree on one. There are so many types of fantasy it's crazy!
