Description The drawing process of my newest piece. It is the first piece I have drawn with my new drawing pad. I got a Wacom Intuos Pro and the difference to my old pad is really enormous. Before I only had a Wacom Bamboo. It was just way to small for my large monitor screen. I struggled so hard on the dress. But I didn't plan what to draw exactly so sometimes the key is just trying out stuff xD.

The drawing is my contest entry for here:

Hi there, I'm the critique from Realism-in-Anime , sorry for the lateness, I was away on vacation.
Background arrangement: I think those are really well done and it shows that you obviously studied how skies look at dawn/sunset, the slanted hill gives it additional dynamics, inviting to explore and observing the drawing while not taking away from the person in the foreground. The technique you've aplied really adds to the dynamics and gives the painting a rounded look. The tree itself is stylized to be a bit flat, often cherry blossom trees are a bit more round and free in form, but it doesn't bother and looks good the way you've done it.
technique: As said background is excellent. I'm not a digital artist so this is a bit harder for me. From what I can see The lightplay is nicely done. The skin appears very smooth, a bit too smooth to look real, but if smooth was what you were going for then you did a great job. To improve the skin tone, it's nice skin tone, don't get me wrong, but maybe add a bit of a rose tint (very slightly) to some appropriate places. then again it's a twilight-ish setting and those colours don't really come out in that kind of light so I'm not sure. The dress, I love how you did the lower part, the hem is really well done with the highlights and all. For the upper part I'd advise you to study the chest and how clothing would wrap around it, and also fold in a twirly case as this. Then you can improve the highlight/shading.
Impact: The composition is really dynamic and looks good together.

Proportions / Realism: As mentioned in earlier comments, the perspective of the arm looks weird, I'd say to improve this maybe add some muscle to her, make the arm less slender/add more round to it in addition to the shading you've done. also study the wrist and hand some more in this angle, I can see you did some studying, but I think there is room for improvement. The best would be to take a reference shot with someone for that position, and try to take a pic in the angle you want to draw the character later on, if they can wear a similar dress(around waist region that would be ideal.
Which brings me to the next. The waist and whole chest rotation does look slightly incorrect, I think it might have to do with how you did the boops, these are hard, especially in an angle as this, but also the invisible shoulder (while quite possibly realistic) does make the piece as if there was something missing. I'd say the transition from neck to boops on the side of the invisible shoulder should have a different line, you went pretty straight/almost a bit round, it might look better if you make the transition from plain chest to breast a bit visible through an ever so slight angle.
at last the face. I don't know if you went for semi-realism or realism, I'd say you went for pretty realistic from the looks of it and facial proportions, so excuse me if I mention something that wasn't part of the concept or goal... The Proportions seem pretty alright, lips are excellently done, the nose seems a tad bit on the small side, and is quite pointy, but fit's in well. The eyes, while quite the right size, do give off an simplified look, I would say that is mainly with how you did the eyelashes, speciffically, you curled the upper ones a lot, but the lower ones are merely a painted line. if you wanted that look in specific, then great, it's make up alright so I'm not going to judge. I think there are some details like the eye shapeand such that could be improved if you go for the very realistic look(form the basic shape, not the make up around)... like study how the skin wraps around the eye in the iris region, the shape of the eyeball has an influence on the lower line.
alright, that's it. I hope my words made sense, otherwise just ask. Ah and if german is easier, we can switch to that too Take care and good luck in future drawings

Hello MalvaLunaLynx,

first of all have to apologize too. I was held up by too much work lately. But I already read your comment a while ago and wanted to answer you all the time. I would like to thank you so much for helping out your advices are really really good <3! I think I learned a lot from it and will practise and study the things you pointed out

The painting of the girl was without reference but I realized that it's really hard without studying the anatomy first so I'll use more reference in future and/or study a bit more how the body looks properly including forshortening

I can't thank you enough

Ah don't worry, I've been super tired anyway. didn't do much of anything last week at all.

I've done no-reference before, and it would be amazing if I could do it, but I prefer having a reference to at least get an idea of how it should be drawn... I did draw studies and skeletons for that reason before, but it only helps so far:/

I'm glad you find my advice useful... I'm never really sure what would help people. I try to take the time and really point out my thoughts as clear as possible though. Especially so constructive critizism isn't misunderstood.

you are welcome. I like helping people that are truly interested in feedback and getting better

Hello Charlotte! I'm not going to go for a lengthy critique but let me tell you, the sky is so gorgeously done! I love the blend of colours to the left of the image which brings energetic vibes to the piece! Girl and the tree are nicely painted too and the composition(rule of thirds I guess) is great too!

Now about the girl's forearm: I think there's a slight perspective issue here. Best thing to do is to draw wireframe cross-section guidelines when you are doing arms and legs which can save you a lot of awkward moments (see this example )

About the ground: the direction of the brush strokes are too even imo. Try adding some variations to break this evenness. Eye picks up these odd details really quick especially at the corners of the image!

Best of luck with the contest!

Hi,

thanks for dropping by I appreciate that so much you took the time to comment and I'm glad you like the background so much . That's a very good reference, I'm sure I'll come back to it in future! I'm not sure I can always apply it because in this case my idea was to make an effect like from a wide camera lens where near object are a bit distored. That is an example of a ultra wide camera lens:

I think there the lines could not be applied...

But I'm not a pro

Hello! I am here from and I hope that this comment will help you. ^_^

So... First of all... Holy cow, this is amazing! The job you've done on this is really amazing. I absolutely love the lightning and the movement. Really, I can see the things move! Great work, really. :3 The leaves that are in the air are giving it that lively sparkle.

The ground is just stunning. Although I'd maybe appreciate a little hint of a texture, you know. But on the second thought, textures maybe wouldn't do well with the overall feel of this piece.

And the sky is stunning, too. I love the colors. And the clouds.

The tree is just great. I love the texture of the pink leaves. How they're shaed, how colourful they are. Just amazing.

Her dress is also another amazing thing. The folds of the fabric are so nice and smooth. And the movement can really be seen.

Well.. About her arm. There is something about her hand that hit my eye. It's like something I cannot really explain, though. Maybe as said that the perspective is exaggerated, I guess.

Oh, her hair! I'd almost forget about her hair. I'd leave it without those parts that are really being blown by the air, or make them less pronounced. But maybe it's good as it is. ^_^

I hope that I helped you at least a bit. Keep up the good work. I really like your art! ^_^

Hello,

honestly thank you so much. That really made me so happy to read that you like it so much <3. And thank you for the helpful advices you know it's quite hard to figure some things out when being so familiar with the piece having spend so much time staring at it. I'll take in account what you said . It helps me a lot

The color palette is great, but this picture is so sleek and smooth that it would benefit from some textures and shadows with sharp borders. The perspective on the hand is exaggerated, but it works.

Hi, yes you could be right . I'm glad to hear that about the hand. Was unsure about it but I wanted that perspective and the effect from a wide angle lens ...

WONDERFUL PIECE! Such a celebration of spring. She reminds me of Pomona, the Greek goddess of the Apple Tree. Inviting and uplifting image. Great work  .
