Here's a recent image from southern Illinois. The clouds set up nicely to capture this sunset from the edge of a bean field.Full view it, and let me know what you think.
underneath it all

I think that this scene has a lot of potential. the colours are very nice, composition too.
now here's what I think could've been done better: the foreground has lost too much detail during postprocessing. it's not that visible at this size, but I am sure that at full size it's quite obvious. I know, I've done things like that too much times. maybe in the future you should try something like this - use a tripod and shoot a few differently exposed pictures. If your camera has an exposure bracketing option, try that. You can try to blend those into a HDR using software such as photomatix, or you can try doing it in photoshop. also, you can stack those photos in different layers on top of each other in photoshop and combine the parts that are properly exposed - shortest exposure for the sky, longest for the ground. there are many tutorials on the web that can help you.
the option I prefer lately is using a graduated neutral density filter. I don't know if you know what they are, but maybe it can help somebody else reading it. it's a filter that is transparent on one end, end dark on the other, with a more or less soft transition in the middle. what you'd do with a scene like this is position the transparent part of the filter over the foreground, and the begining of the dark part on the horizon. that way you get a properly exposed sky and ground in one shot, and you only need a minimum of postprocessing. it's better when you spend more of your time taking photographs, and less in front of your computer editing them, right?

Well I do really appreciate the time you put into this comment. This site is too full of the "nice job" comments and its really nice when people put thought into comments. All of this is excellent advice, only this actually is an HDR shot. I think the only reason that you think there is detail lost in the foreground is because there may have been a little motion blur between shots due to a breeze. I cant remember if I used a ND filter for this shot, but I often do use one. This is a composite of 5 exposures, combined in photomatix. Then all i did in CS3 was mess a bit with levels and color, and resize of course. Again, I do greatly appreciate the thought you put into this comment!

I guess the 5 shot combination explains what happened. It's not easy making a sharp hdr image of thing's that move like the plants, waves etc.

Very nice work. The sky is truly brilliant. my only critique would be the amount of greens displayed. I'd cut the field in half so as to emphasize that beautiful sunset some more.

Here is the constructive critique you wanted:
Good solid composition nice and simple but very effective. The colors picked up are quite nice. This is a very nice shot. Very rich. I use the triangle rule which was used by the masters and which I judge a pictureβs composition by, well that and creativity. The rule follows that you have 3 parts, figures, objects, or elements that create more or less a right or isometric triangle. This triangle can be repeated many time over and over again for increasing complex pictures but with a strong composition. Other triangles can be used but cause a weaker composition. This is often very hard in photography and is one of the many challenges to find it naturally happening.

This is a magnificent photo. There is great balance between the sky and the earth itself. The colors of blue, green, and orange gives off a refreshing feeling to the audiences. This is a very well taken photo. =]
