Description So, here he is again, just more of a close up to test the new computer.
Before something this close at this resolution would have taken 12+ hours to render. This one only took 3, upside to more powerful computers.

Beautiful work, sir.  I love the detail on the beads, and of course his skin.

Beautiful, but why does it even take that long? My own renders take at most a few minutes, and usually less than one minute when there is only a single subject like this one with a simple background. Though granted you're using *somewhat* more resolution than *I*do, but hours?!

I'm not using default lights. I'm using lights from IDG Impact Lighting set that are constructed around emissive surfaces and actually have a lot of structure to them - right down to stands that look like photo studio lights. That seems to make a huge difference to the amount of time.

I also tend to set my SubD level on the high side, especially for my models.

Well, it certainly yields some very good results. I suppose it's ideal for you if, unlike me, you're not doing an average of twenty renders a day and are satisfied with mediocre rather than high art. You go for quality rather than quantity, and for you that works very well. Me... I'd never have the patience! You obviously know lots more about lighting than I do too! One reason why I'm not likely to change my ways, and definitely you should not change yours when you get results like this.
I do wish though sometimes that I could render my green-eyed ginger character Rainstar with quality like this!

I've always gone more for quality. I'm also used to renders taking hours because when I was studying 3d animation we used to leave renders running over night.

Spoken like a true artist!
That would indeed be the most sensible option for such renders. I was even going to try that when expeimenting with shadows only to discover a way to make them render much more quickly than I'd been able to in previous attempts.
