Description: Megafaunal venomous animals are a rare sight outside of a few animals. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komondoensis) was the largest predator that used envenomation to kill prey. However, Komodo dragons were limited to a tiny island with no other large predators. A lot of vipers and elapids have venom strong enough to kill animals as big as horses. Vipers are the most advanced group of snakes. In the Novicene, a group of vipers evolved to become large predators. The largest species of viper in Asia is the giant stalker viper.
The giant stalker viper is a ground-dwelling viper that holds a role similar to some constrictors species. Unlike those kinds of snakes, the stalker viper uses venom to take down. This venom works as a blood-thinner, causing any prey it bites to bleed out violently. The hunting strategy of this reptile starts with the snake following the prey animal. When the viper is in striking distance, the viper will bite the leg or rear of the prey. After it bites the other animal, it’s will usually run away, bleeding from the wound. Soon, the animal will die of blood loss and exhaustion. Since the snake follows the prey the whole time, the snake is in the right location to feast. Like most snakes, the stalker viper eats their catch head first. The eating process can take over an hour, and the snake can throw the meal up when stressed. A meal as large as a pig can last a snake for over a year.
Unlike other venomous snakes, these vipers don’t hide under rocks or underground during the day. Usually, the snake will hide in the tall grasses, taking in the sun to heat it. After a nice sunbath, the stalker viper will go hunting for some prey if they are hungry. If they aren’t hungry, the snake spends most of its resting, sleeping, and looking out for other predators. On an average day, the life of a stalker viper is boring and uneventful. However, the snake will fight back if it gets threatened by a predator. Like most snakes, the viper will strike at the predator and sometimes bite it. Although, most predators don’t mess with adult snakes due to the length of their fangs. Most predators attack the babies, but this act is still deadly since the snake is highly venomous. Still, they are one of the deadliest animals that live in the Taiyang Desert.
