Description: Snakes are one of the most common reptiles in the desert. Although, none are as noteworthy as the Southern flower-mouthed rattlesnake. The Southern flower-mouthed rattlesnake is one of the most highly specialized species of rattlesnakes. Descended from the Western diamondback (Crotalus atrox), this snake has convergently evolved with pitcher plants and Orchid mantis to become a great hunter.
One of its most notable features is its brightly colored mouth and tongue. These parts are to lure in animals that drink nectar due to it looking like a cactus’s flower. Some snakes lick these flowers to make them themselves seem more like the flower. The general strategy of these snakes is to lie and wait for a hummingbird or bat. Once the animal is close to it, the snake will strike and catch the prey. A less specialized part of its kit is the rattler at the end of its tail. Like all rattlesnakes, the rattler warns predators that it is venomous and will attack if the other animal comes closer.
Speaking of its venom, this snake has a very toxic bite and can kill a person in one-hour or less. This venom is a mixture of neurotoxin and hemotoxins, targeting tissue, blood, and the nervous system. The cocktail of chemicals allows the snake to kill prey quickly and not get injured in the process. Although having many deadly adaptations, it is not immune to being killed by large predators. Some of its most common predators are the hawk-ravens, terror-runners, secretary owls, desert badgers, and even other snakes. Even with these adversaries, they are very successful predators and extremely unique when it comes to snakes.
