Description: In the Novicene, some of the top predators are the land eagle, a group of terrestrial predatory eagles. These birds are descendants of the African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), an eagle that primarily ate fish. They moved to more terrestrial roles after the osprey descendants drove them out of their niches. They started to eat larger prey and eventually lead to the flightless land eagles. One of the most active species of land eagle is the Saharan raptor eagle, a velociraptor-like land eagle.
The Saharan raptor eagle is a social species of land eagle that hunts in large packs. They mainly use their claws to kill their large prey by cutting near the neck or other major arteries. The prey animal will bleed out due to these cuts. After the other creature dies, the raptor eagle will tear up the flesh with their beaks. This sharp beak is like that of a knife, slicing up the meat and break through the tough skin of most herbivores. They have also developed much more weight on their bones. This bulkier physical structure allows the raptor eagle to tank a few hits from some herbivores. If the eagle weighed a similar weight to its ancestor, one blow could injure the eagle or even kill it.
The Saharan land eagles hunt in packs like their larger relative, the Congo land eagle. However, they have a different hunting strategy from the land eagles. When a raptor eagle finds a prey animal, it will call for the rest of the pack to begin the hunt. When all the raptor eagles arrive, the raptor eagles will run at the animal. Once the animal flees, the raptor eagles run along the side of the animal. They will then start to kill at the major blood vessels of the animal. Once the animal weakens from blood loss, the Saharan raptor eagle will start to eat the meat of the animal.
