Description I was invited to participate in the Copenhagen Denmark Sand Sculpture Festival this May. The theme of the event was the History of the World, and I was given Ancient Greece to be artistic with.
I decided to recreate some Greek Mythology. The Titan Cronus had 3 sons who divided the realms of the earth between them. Poseidon took the seas and oceans, Zeus claimed the Sky as his domain, and Hades ruled the underworld. Mount Olympus overlooks from above.

It took 9 days to complete the whole sculpture. The sculpture stands 14 feet tall.

This side depicts Hades on his throne surrounded by fire.

Here are the 2 other sides

Incredible,
Just to correct your mythology: Cronus was a titan, not a god.

Dude,
Hades is the original Satan.
Greek mythology existed long before modern-day Christianity.

The flames are inaccurate, considering the traditional Greek view of the afterlife, but otherwise this is truly excellent work.

you have a good point. I didnt want to do rocks, and I felt the 3 headed dog, Cerebus, would have taken too long to carve

Best sand sculpture ever~! I've never seen one like this! Fantastico~! Be careful, you might just raise Hades; he himself would be proud, I'm sure. And not just one, but three?! I probably would've quit from frustration. Sand is not my material. I praise you for your diligence and eye for detail! I have to fave one of these. I had to do a project on Greek Mythology, read a book, write a story, and I watched a movie involving them. I'll pick the one who was my father in the story I wrote.

.....I can barely make a cylinder sand castle about 10 cm high with a bucket.... This is a triangle and a beautiful sculpture... *lost for words*

How did you get it to last 9 days? It had to be roped up and out of the way of the waves. And how does it stick? It has to be moist doesn't it?

Did you ever do several meter tall sand castle a few years that looked like a real castle with a dragon breathing fire and climbing up the side? If so, I saw you, and it was awesome. If not, it was still awesome, and I could imagine you making it. These are all beautiful. I swear, all sand sculptures like this defy logic...and gravity..... You aren't a wizard, are you? Or maybe a demi-god, since you did Greek mythology? But I'm serious, I have no idea how that stays put, except for you trading your soul having magic powers.

Apparently, I have found my words in time for a flood I am lost for words to describe how amazing it is, so I have to ramble on about witchcraft Wow, I'm talkative.... and like the winking emote.... Shutting up now....

sculptin In reply to Werevampiwolf [2012-08-07 06:37:01 +0000 UTC]

it actually lasted for a month or even two. The sculpture was on a dock, roped off from the public but away from the water.
No I didn't do that particular sand sculpture. Sand is an old art form
I am not a wizard, more of an alchemist.

Wow, was it difficult to keep them from getting damaged overnight?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sculptin In reply to EmiliaKyuchi [2012-08-09 17:10:50 +0000 UTC]

no, the area was fenced off to keep vandals off, and there is wires sticking out of the tops of the sculptures to keep the birds off. Also we use dirty pit sand, that is sharp and fine which retains water very well, as well as after the sculpture is carved we spray on a layer of diluted white glue to stop wind erosion.
