both the meaning and the design
the time before a war and the time at a war is always so very different nowadays...

very good typeset, and the color scheme is great
the textures as well, just very well done

Nice work and a nice sentiment.

Hopefully you will never have to find out that trying "reason" with fascists and extremists that want to enslave or kill you is the only thing more futile than war itself...

scumah In reply to IMyst [2009-01-13 03:10:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

And, did you find it out alaready? I mean, have you ever tried reason, directly, with those you call fascists and extremists? I'm not trying defend them, cause it'd be pretty stupid, it's just that I don't think we share opinions, because mine is that wars are always avoidable.

I don't want to sound offensive or aggressive at all, so please, don't misunderstand my words. Thanks for the comment, mate

I'm an old Vietnam vet. I've seen the results of trying to negotiate peace with those who have absolutely no desire for anything other than power. I've seen the mindless slaughter of innocents used as nothing more than a message of terror to others - just as we see it today.

I understand what you're saying though. No one but a fool wants war. And, if the LEADERS had to actually fight instead of sending others out to die for them, then I suspect there would be a lot fewer wars.

Unfortunately history shows that most wars are far from avoidable. And again, that would also depend on whether you classify civil wars/genocides under the same definition of war. Africa is a prime example. How does one negotiate with warlords and pirates on a continent that has been in constant wars, famines and political turmoil since the dawn of time?

I'm not remotely trying to be offensive either. I'm reminded of some well intentioned Brits some years back who decided (with great pomp and media fanfare) to go into a mid-east war zone to serve as human shields to "stop the war." Long story short, they were out with their tails tucked between their legs as fast or faster than they went in. And when they returned home, they didn't want to give any interviews at all. There's a moral there somewhere.

Reality sucks.

I was 19 once upon a time in Vietnam. By the time I was your age, I was 60...

Hope that's a fair appraisal for you. That work okay, bud? Thanks for the straight talk. That's the basis for all ideas.

In my honest opinion, the hardest thing when discussing those issues is being neutral. In fact, I don't think it's even possible, but I'll try to do my best.

Are "those who have absolutely no desire for anything other than power" the government of North Vietnam and it's allies? From my point of view, they definitely are. But what about the states? They had no remorse of taking part in a war where probably millions of civilians died. On top of that, the war was taking place in the other side of the world, and the only reason they went to war was to fight against the comunism evil, trying to gain influence abroad. I don't think those millions of civilians and thousands of US soldiers were worth it, honestly.

What I'm trying to say is, there's not always a good side and a bad side, and both sides can't be good, ever. And that's why trying to be neutral is hard. Look at the Israeli – Palestinian conflict right now. A terrorist government trying to kill "the zionist invader" with ridiculously ineffective rockets, against a huge military power that doesn't hesitate when pressing a button to kill dozens of civilians. That war is avoidable with no doubt, but those leaders they have are so amazingly stupid that they both need the war. So I absolutely agree with your second paragraph.

I think civil wars/genocides are definitely the same as a war. And negotiating with those warlords or pirates is impossible. But I'm not explaining well. With those leaders, wars are far from being avoidable as you say, but i'm counting (naively, I guess) on human common sense. Why our leaders are megalomaniacs despots? The vast majority of people is just normal, why aren't our leaders as the vast majority of people? I mean, right now, with those governors, war is obviously unavoidable, cause they want war. But having those leaders is avoidable. Reality sucks, indeed.

You are far from being offensive, and that was positively a fair appraisal for me. My English is not perfect at all, so if something has no sense, do not hesitate to ask/laugh, i'll clarify those things Have a good day!
