This is very helpful! I've had SAI for a long time and I've never known the value of those layer modes!
I have a question though, what program do you use to put the text in your tutorials? SAI doesn't have a text tool, does it?

*Gasp* You can do that? I've never thought of that... Wow, I feel dumb now, but thank you, you just saved me a hell of a lot of trouble :'D

You have to use wordart though, it won't copy text. :3
When you copy to say, go to layer > luminancy to transparancy, to clear the white background
and then you have the text in Sai ^^

Oh, okay. That's really handy. I've tried copying text from paint over but couldn't get rid of the white box for the life of me. So that's what the luminance to transparency does... Nice! That's saves me a whole lot of heartache. Thank you :3

That is wonderful. I wish I had known that. The greyscale thing seems like it would come in handy as well.

I don't quite understand how diferent shading colors work with the base colors, so I just use a normal black Layer with about 50 opacity.

Just try using different colours sometimes. They create very neat colour combo's, usually much more interesting ones than semi-transparant black.
I usually don't know how they'll look beforehand either, it's trial and error every time. ^^
Over time you'll start to develop a feeling for which ones fit together and what kind of effect they give. (Example: brown or red over yellow, creates a golden-ish shadow)

There aren't like version number versions of SAI, as far as I know.
By distributing and re-distributing the same version or different translations of the same version, over and over again, some functions probably have gotten lost.
Just try to find a new (different) one.

But it sure makes things a lot easier this way, in stead of manually picking out the color on the color wheel yourself. x3
