Description
The guitar lay in his hands as it let itself be touched and strummed, music drained from between the strings and filled the quiet room. A silent tear slipped down Estelle's soft, pink cheek and towards her chin; it slowly took its downward fall towards the carpet and landed with a splash. Santiago glanced at her and frowned, he stopped playing and placed his palm under her chin, pulling her face upwards to face him.
"My dear, what is troubling you?" he asked, his voice deep with concern.
Estelle gave him a smirk, trying to hide the obvious sorrow that showed in her eyes. "Nothing at all, you know I am fine."
"Fine in body," Santiago winked. "however, you are not fine in health. What could be a matter worth pressing against your precious mind? What is it that makes your eyes so sad?"
She moved her eyes towards the floor, frowning and sighing slowly. "Nobody will ever understand." Estelle took hold of the hand holding her chin, looking into his eyes. "You are but a man, who you are you to wonder what goes on in the mind of a women so young?"
"Estelle, my dear," Santiago murmured. "You are a mystery, you make me wonder. You are my friend, and you make me worry when I see the sadness in your eyes. Please, darling girl, tell me what is harming you?" She closed her eyes and rested her head on his hand, rubbing his wrist with her palm. "I don't understand myself," she mumbled quickly, and with that she broke into a harsh sob. Surprised by her sudden outburst, Santiago quickly grasped hold of her in a strong hug. "My dear! Don't cry, it will do you no good."
"Santiago, you know nothing!" She gasped, breaking his hug and standing up from the couch. "You play your guitar, you write your sheet music. You know nothing but song, you know nothing but the love of the notes." Her light face was glazed with tears, eyes still full of the pain that resided inside her. Santiago stood up and placed his guitar beside him, his brown complexion looking utterly stunning in the dull light of the lamp. "I don't think you'll understand, Ago. What will become of me, a broken hearted women who knows nothing but one man? I'll never learn, never fly, never land, never try. What will I do, when I want what I cannot have?"
"You will take what you can," Santiago told her. "while you still can. Wait for what comes next."
"You're all speech." She hissed, fresh tears flowing from her ducts. "I don't understand myself, Ago. How do I expect you to understand?" He frowned at her, placing his arms around her once more. "Darling girl, you let yourself think too much."
Estelle cried freely into his arms, taking comfort in his embrace. Santiago smoothed her hair down and rubbed the small of her back. "You must not let it worry you so much, relax and breathe. You need to let go, quit thinking, follow your heart."
"What if my heart doesn't know what to think?"
"It will." He said, matter-of-factly. "It will, don't worry about that. My girl, you are making yourself sick. Your eyes let us see your emotions like windows, they cry to be let out and free. You need to do what will be best for you."
"I don't kn-"
"I don't want you to say that anymore, Estelle." Santiago said in a deep growl. "You are doubtful, negative even." She moaned in his arms and tried to push back, but he kept her grounded. "Estelle, please. You are killing your soul."
"Santiago, let me go."
"Estelle, listen to me. I love you my friend, and so does Maurice. You know Maurice loves you more then he loves the food he consumes. You know he loves you more then the breaths he takes."
Estelle blinked at the sound of her lovers name. "And I love Maurice."
"Do you?" Santiago asked.
"Yes."
Santiago sighed, placing his hand on the small of her back. "Estelle, you say yes, yet you say you are confused. What does your heart say, Stelle?" She looked up at him, her eyes full of sadness. "I love him," she said. "More then I have ever loved anyone in my life." She pushed herself away from him again, only to be held Santiago’s strong arms once again. Santiago looked her in her chocolate brown eyes, his eyes serious but they still had the same friendly tone she knew and loved. "Then let him know, Stelle." She glanced at her best friend, the man that saved her tin many situations, the man that she knew she would always hold on the highest pedestal. "I will," she told him. "I promise."
