Description Crystal tears slid down her porcelain cheeks and gathered at her chin, where they slowly dripped off and fell in a downward spiral to the carpeted floor below. Life, in any persons point of view, is not perfect. It is full of ups and downs, the bad points seem to last forever and make you miserable. They never last forever, they leave you with an feeling of emptiness and sometimes regret, but they never last forever. A human can heal over time, time heals all wounds. Time, in Emma’s case, was taking extra long.
She had loved and lost, and she regretted everything; she did not regret the love or him, but she regretted what had happened. She regretted her words, her actions, and losing him. She did everything she could to forget about the man she loved so many years ago. She worked, she dated, and she went to social gatherings. Her friends offered her new men when she would break up with her current one, and those relationships did not last very long. She always saw the young man she fell in love with in her current lovers, always pictured him holding her, caressing her.Tonight she sat down and sobbed, reminiscing of her lost love. Tonight was harder for her than normal nights. It was their day, their night.
Their anniversary.

It was the summer of 1965 when they met, two young kids fresh out of high school. His name was Sawyer and her's was Emma. She was a pretty brunette, bouncy and fun with a southern accent to top her off. He was tall and conservative, but his smile proved that he had a boyish side. They had met during mass on Sunday during a food sale and as soon as their eyes met it was love.
"Well, hello there miss." he had said to her, flashing a brilliant grin and taking her hand in his. She had shook his hand in the most lady-like way, and smiled back. "You're quite the gentleman."
He took her out to the river after mass, he showed her the ducks and they grew to know each other by the water. By the end of the night they had considered themselves a couple. The days that followed were never dull. Sawyer came to her house everyday to pick her up and together they went for walks, for ice-cream, to the cinema, and to the fairs that showed up. It was love destined, and they both knew it. He taught her how to swim in the river by his house, and she taught him how to write stories. And one summer night he took her to the park and on one of the large oak trees they carved their names.
Soon the summer began to dull, the tree's leaves turned orange and red and brown, the air gained a breeze of cold, but their love remained the same. She planned to live here with him, forever in the little town.
Tragedy occurred on the last day of summer when Sawyers house burned to the ground, taking his mother and sister with it. His father had left them years before, overcome with selfishness and lust for another woman. Sawyer looked after his mother and sister as the man of the house, and cared for them with all his heart. The fire came as a devastating blow to Sawyer, he became distraught and depressed. Emma cared for him and talked him through his grief, she loved him just as much as she had when she met him, but in his mourning Sawyer began to lose feeling. It occurred to her that he didn't love her the same anymore, but she tried to see past it; he would love her again when he overcame his depression.
Sawyer owned no house, no property, and as he was only 17 he had to live with a family member under state law. The court granted his Aunt and Uncle custody of him only weeks after his mother's death. His Aunt lived up state, hours away from his hometown and further away from Emma’s. When he told Emma things began to fall apart.
He arrived at her door that same day, full of despair and agony. Her eyes were wide with happiness when she saw him but the happiness soon faded when she realized the pain in his eyes. "Sawyer, what's wrong?"
"I'm leaving, Emma." He said. His heart ached with pain when he realized how blunt he had been, but the words couldn't have come out any other way.
Shock flooded her face within seconds. "What?"
He swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat. "I am leaving."
"When! Sawyer, you can't!" Her voice rose in pain and panic. She grabbed him and held him.
"This week, maybe two days time. I have too, Emma. The court -"
She pushed away from him. "Forget that darn court, Sawyer! They don't matter!"
"I have to follow the law," Sawyer retorted. "I have too. They signed me to my Aunt Polly."
Emma grabbed at her hair, fighting back tears. "You can live with me, Sawyer!"
"No."
She stopped grabbing her hair, his tone stung her. "You don't love me."
"I love you!" Sawyer exclaimed, surprised at her absurd statement.
"No, you do not!" She cried, and the tears broke free and she lost herself. "You haven't treated me the same since that darned fire! You don't love me!"
"Oh will you hush up!" Sawyer replied, grabbing hold of her. "I'm not myself Emma and you darn well know that. I love you with every part of my heart."
"You can't go!"
"I have to, Emma!" He said, trying not to get mad at her.
She was upset, she wrenched herself away from him and sobbed openly. Her mascara had run and her hair stuck to her face.
"You don't understand," he said after a few moments silence. "I have to do this."
She glared at him, fresh tears running down her face. "I understand perfectly well, Sawyer! I just wish you had broken up with me in a better way."
"What!" He cried, dumbstruck. "I'm not breaking up with you, Emma!"
She grabbed at her hair again, trying to calm down. "Sure you aren't, Sawyer. Sure you aren't. And you're not leaving me. My God, Sawyer Croft, I hate you! I hate you more than I've hated anything!"
He stood still, watching her grow angrier. "Emma, I still love you."
"God, don't you dare lie to me!" She yelled at him as she pointed an accusing finger at him.
"I'm not lying to you, Emma!" He said back, trying to take her in his arms.
She slapped him. "Don't you touch me. God, I hate you! I hate the way you love me, I hate you!"
He stopped trying to touch her then. His shoulders dropped and he grabbed at his chest, at his heart. He had felt it break inside of him.
She glared at him and breathed up and down heavily, tears slid down her face slower now.
"I guess this is good-bye." He said at last, his voice heavy.
"Well I guess so." She muttered.
He was in his truck when she had come running towards him, tears falling down her face once more, her voice full of regret.
"Sawyer! Sawyer, please! I love you. I didn't mean it!"
He turned the key in the ignition, blocking her out. He'd come back to see her the next day, he didn't want to talk to her right now.
"Sawyer, I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
He would come see her tomorrow. Then he drove away.
He didn't come back the next day.

Heartache is a type of pain that doesn't die quickly. Emma knew this, and the heartache ate at her each day. Today was different. It made her have feelings she no longer wanted to feel, feelings that made her feel as though she would never be sad again, but the memories would come back and the tears would begin to flow.
"Oh, Sawyer..."
He was the love she had lost, the love she searched for again. She knew that she would never find a love like she experienced with Sawyer again, a love truer then truth itself.
Deep down she knew she lost him forever.
Deeper down she knew she was wrong.
