Description I'm about to begin another big illustration project, so I wanted to practice with some digital textures beforehand.

This is my lovely mare, Iris. I adopted her last summer from my dear ~xXInsaneSoulXx . (One of these days, I swear this mare will get a full picture to show off her pretty wings! ) Her hair is actually quite a bit longer, but we can just pretend she got a haircut here.

I hope you all like this new textured style! I've never tried anything like this before, so I'd love to hear your opinion.


-Wacom Intuos 4 & Photoshop CS5
-No reference used
-A couple hours of work/experimentation
-Used pencil-effect brush by ~UninvitedChaos [link] for the lines and shading; used this brush by*nebezial [link] for blending
-Textures created by me using several layers and a variety of brushes (6 or so)

Haha, no worries dear!  (I fall behind in my art inbox ALL the time!  )  Glad you like her!  I really like this softer-style a lot now that I've been practicing with it.   I'm definitely keeping it in my artistic arsenal...    Thanks always for the lovely comment!

oooh my, she's so lovely! i love her purple color, and the experiment with textures is a success! you managed very well to blend them togetherm it even gave the drawing a more sketchy style (which i think is very beautiful to look at!)


i hope to be seeing a full-body pic of her someday, she seems to be a beauty!  

you did a great job colouring, experiments like that are always great, another technique to try on and apply in different situations <3

Thank you dear!    I'm glad you think the experiment was a success!    I really like this softer style now that I've been practicing with it, so you will certainly see more pieces like this from me!    (And I've actually had a full body pic in mind for a year now--just need to set aside a few hours to get it on paper!  )

you're most welcome, darling! it was a success, and you know what they say: practice makes perfect it's always great when we do experiments like this because we end up making things we didn't know we knew (hope that made sense!)

Glad you like this new style!    It was fun to try, and I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.    Definitely hope to do more equine pics like this!

(Time for massively late comment reply! )  Thanks dear!  I'm glad you like my first picture of Iris!    I super wish I could clone myself and spend more time drawing my OC's.  (Iris is such a pretty girl, and one of my absolutely favorites!  You did an awesome job designing her!  )  I've had a full-body pic in mind for her for over a year now.  I'll find time one of these days....
