We have artichoke plans that grow wild nearby, they're very small because noone really takes care of them, but sometimes you can find a really nice edible one, I love the flowers...We love to eat artichokes, dipping the leaves in mayonnaise...or melted butter....

thank you very much
you meant you only knew the canned ones?
artichokes are harvested before the bloom - it's like with basil or chive: beautiful flower, but the herbs lost flavour
when the artichoke starts to bloom it isn't edible anymore, just beautiful decoration

We usually get them in a bottle, yep I've never actually cooked them from fresh - is it difficult?

no it's quite easy, like boiling eggs
it's like with salade: you take away the outer leaves - those which are limp or dry and you cut the tips of remaining leaves 'cause they have spikes
then you boil them in salted water
the heart of the artichoke is that what you buy in glasses or cans and you can eat the whole of it, the outer leaves which are still hard of structure you pull from the artichoke, dip into melted butter or mayonaise and just bite of the first third which was attachted to the artichoke, it's a bit laborious (nothing if you're starving) but tasty *nomnom it's like an appetizer
gee that was hard to explain lots of unknown terms

I might be able to find some at the market - there's a huge organic veg section I'll have a look next time I'm there

No luck at the market, but hogret says one of our grocery stores has them occasionally. I'll keep looking.

maybe they are out of season at present, you're having summer after all and artichokes are best in autumn
good luck and keep looking they're worth it
