Description The promised tutorial! The Serah is my sister,
Feel free to ask me questions!

EDIT: 3M 78 polystyrene foam insulation spray! Buy it and use it in place of regular glue, it doesn't eat your foam up!

I was confused about the hilt/handle part. Is it strong enough to hold it when posing in an upward position? I don't quite get how you attached it to the base of the bow/sword. Just super glue? If so im guessing its not strong enough at all to apply any pressure to it right?

Do you have a pic of the parts laid out? For instance the arms before you attached them to the box

Hey well I wish I had your talent! I can't draw and my clay working skills are horrendous

tokiohotelfan02 In reply to seeka-san [2013-05-03 17:22:43 +0000 UTC]

Lol how I learned to draw was by tracing first and then I stopped with that and started drawing normal and with Snow's and Lightning's necklaces I used tracing paper, traced the design and stuck it on the clay and cut it out lol so that wasn't too hard

It's not that hard, sewing clothes and finding the right fabrics now that's hard lol but there is one project proving difficult for me and that's Serah's necklace :/ I found the perfect circle but it's got deigns in it and her spiral part is annoying to form out of clay lol

The necklace gave my sister a lot of problems too, as well as someone else I know who is making it haha. Seems to be a difficult piece xD

I love your design, this one is WAY easier to make from the looks of it than the others I have seen! I have three questions though.

First of all, have you figured out a way to make the handle move when it's a bow? The only thing I could come up with was putting a piece of PVC pipe in the center for it to move along and fastening it somehow when it's a sword.

Second, did you just screw in the spike that sticks between the blades?

And finally, how durable is the weapon when it's done? I wanted to make mine a little smaller in the handle area but I want to make sure it won't break before I do that.

When you say make the handle move, do you mean draw back like an actual bow? If so, the answer is I think so. I'll be putting my theory to the test this summer when I remake the whole thing, and I'll be doing it with a spring loaded system.

The spike was screwed in the middle, and I believe I glued it at the edges to help reinforce it.

As for durability, the blades and rope-handle area held up great. The back handle (the one that should draw back) not so much, somebody slammed into it, which broke it. We re-glued it, but really it needed to be attached to the middle piece to make it 100% sturdy.

As for making the handle area smaller, that won't be an issue. I made it WAY too big here, and am actually going to be redoing almost the entire thing out of balsa wood. Even if you use foam, it is still very, very sturdy I promise! If you're worried about that, you can paper mache or bondo it to add strength!

I hope these answers are helpful!

I was indeed referring to drawing it back like an actual bow. When you figure out the mechanism you should post an updated tutorial; I would love to see how this has evolved.

Thanks for answering my questions!

seeka-san In reply to Katsumiiiii [2013-04-04 20:18:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The blades are attached to the base with carriage bolts, which allow them to move. Clasps keep them held together in sword form. In bow form, the strings prevents them from going together, and there are little stoppers to prevent them from falling back and hitting the base. idk if that makes sense....?

Awesome tutorial! I've built most of my bowblade but was struggling with how to stop the blades from falling down and hitting the base when in bow form. Screws! Genius idea! Thank you so much for this, it's been driving me insane trying to work it out

that's a really helpful tutorial! may I ask what material you used for the strings?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

seeka-san In reply to Averia-Avie [2012-08-15 01:40:46 +0000 UTC]

Glad this is helpful! As for the strings I used this elastic, stretchable string I found at Michaels. They can be found on rolls in the jewelry department. Think like the elastic used for beaded bracelets.

And your Serah cosplay is really cute ^___^

If you were going to make a bow like this [link] would you use similar materials?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

seeka-san In reply to Dark1577-7 [2012-08-14 01:48:51 +0000 UTC]

Nice bow! And yes, you could use similar materials If I were to build that, I'd make the 2 end pieces out of foam and use a plastic tube or wooden pole for the middle part to help make it sturdier.
