Do we know that Vaatu even sent the spirit? There's no indication that he's controlling them other than the act that Unalaq can command them, and the fact that he was angry when thought Korra was dead proves he didn't plan for it to happen. It seems the spirit was acting on its own.

I sent this pick to Robert Walker (Nostalgia Critic's brother, and a huge fan of The Legend of Korra) on facebook and do you know what he said?
He said "Thank you, I didn't even get that. WTF!?"

I think it's pretty clear Vaatu didn't send that spirit. Unalaq was trying to have Eska and Desna capture Korra and the spirit showing up ruined that plan. Why wouldΒ Vaatu deliberately sabotage his own plan?

Um first of all, he turned several innocent spirits into dark spirits and have them attack civilians.
Second, that was the point of this post. Don't you EVER read descriptions!? Why comment here if you don't know what it is about!?

His power causes it, but he cannot control them.

With his counterpart eliminated, he'd gain enough strength to break out of the Tree.Β Then, he'd be free to do whatever he was planning to do 10,000 years ago.

That's not how it works! He needed the Portals open for harmonic convergence for him to reach full strength. And even if he destroyed Raava, he wouldn't be able to get out of his prison, and there wouldn't be any spirits to corrupt!

With Raava destroyed, his power would be immensely magnified, just as it was at the end of 'Darkness Falls'.Β I'd say that would be enough to break free of the Tree's power.

Nah! From what I see, the reason Vaatu's grew was due to being in Unaloq's body long enough. I mean think about it, even if Unaloq didn't kill Raava he still would've transformed into a spirit and killed her afterwards anyway!

Vaatu was able to grow because he'd destroyed Raava.Β Defeating her meant a massive increase in his own power.Β Being in a human body won't do that by itself - Raava has been the Avatar Spirit for 10,000 years, and she didn't have that kind of power.

Without Harmonic Convergence, Vaatu's only way of getting stronger was to corrupt more Spirits! And furthermore, if Vaatu could've gotten more powerful for having a dark spirit kill Korra, then why did he want her alive to open the portals in the first place!?

Fair enough.Β Perhaps the Dark Spirit that swallowed Korra was a rogue, and not under Vaatu's direct control.

Makes sense, but I'm still gonna treat it like Vaatu can control Dark Spirits, otherwise there is no joke.
