so he punctured that mushroom which i assume is poisonous so he could have that element...
thats quite the interesting power! 
i have an OC firmiliar like that, but hers work differently......instead she can steal the element of another dragon for herself and leave them without one

No, he has to continuously chew upon the poison mushrooms until he gains the power. It's like you can't just snap your fingers and know martial arts, you got to learn and practice.
