Description *please full view* The preview image is really bad >_<

I don't really know what I can say about this piece. After working on this for at least a month, it's finally done... but it's not at all how I wanted it to look. Still, I do like how it came out with the textures and the dull colors. I'm also surprised that I used green; this is probably the first time I've ever used green in a picture o_o This was also my first attempt at drawing a real background... but it didn't really work out; hence, the heavy-duty texturing >_> I'll try harder next time.

This is also the redone character design of Fallyn (for my story Flock of Ravens). She had a major make-over, mostly because my style's changed so much since the last time I drew her. I spent a long time designing herdress^^ It's based on the robe a l'anglaise... but I made some changes so it's not really historically accurate. Next time I draw Fallyn (for her character sheet), I'll draw the correct version of the dress as well as a couple other outfits for her. This image was more or less for practice; I don't really consider it an "offical" Flock of Ravens illustration.

Comment and critique is much appreciated.

There are a lot of images that I like in your gallery but Amidst The Graves is my favorite.

If you had lived in Los Angeles in 1906, you might have worn something like this:

The folds on her skirt and fichu are beautiful. Fabric is hard to do right, and you, sir, have done it right.

The foliage reminds me of Alphons Mucha. I think your first attempt at a background was quite successful. It fits your style very much
Great job on the statue too. I love all the cracks in the textures in the stone.

I just love the variable weights of your line work, and your color palette. The way everything kind of twists and entwines, from her hair to the branches to the folds of her skirt, is beautiful.

I don't know how you do it. Really, I don't. To be able to draw so well that kind of dress and to paint a full picture like this so magnificiently, it drives me jealous, ha ha. I love the whole picture concept. The statue is probably my favourite thing, because it really looks like a statue. The folds, in it, make me think of the statues I recently saw in Museo del Prado, in Madrid. Great job with the colors and composition, too.

Backgrounds are hard- it's taken me years to get to a point where I'm comfortable doing them. I don't think you did such a bad job, though. I really like how you did the flowers, and the woods remind me of a Japanese woodblock print. I especially love your subdued autumnal palette.

As for Fallyn's dress- how isn't it historically accurate? Wow, I must know less about 1780s clothes than I thought I did...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Seitou In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2007-04-20 17:27:32 +0000 UTC]

lol, it does look like a woodblock print. ... So I guess this is Asian-rococo

Well, the way I did the black & green lace trim around the sleeves and the upper part of the gown sort of deviated from the original design (which didn't really have any lace). I just wanted to try out a different style of drawing lace, but for some reason, it came out looking more Victorian than rococo. Then again, maybe that's because I made it black (dark colors always look Victorian). But the long-sleeved dresses from the 1870s that I've looked at haven't had any sort of lace on the cuffs like that; the cuffs are always fairly plain. I've seen only a couple with some lace on the cuffs, but nothing as frilly as what I drew. For the most part, I guess it's just me being nit-picky
