Prologue: The Roseate Slumber

Severus brought the heavy black tome to her feet. He puffed all out of breath, yet managed to stand the large leatherbound up on its base, balancing it before her. He looked up at her resolute, his eyes piercing jet orbs…

“Please…Will you read to me?”

Eileen reached down, taking the rather large book in hand, she studied the spine, a demure little smile moved across her lips, she reached down and took Severus by the hand, he climbed up onto her waiting lap, settling there quite comfortably, he looked up and returned her little smile, the call of the blood was thick between them. His bright young eyes shone with anticipation.

She was struck with the sudden realization that she had gone much too long walking in the world of the Muggles. She must now embrace her wizarding heritage and guide her young son along that mystical path, whatever the cost…

“This is an interesting choice you have made my dear…” She took him warmly at the waist, pulling him closer to her. “Why this book and not one of your own…”

“I like the shape of the letters, the ones that are different…”

“Really? … Show them to me”

Severus turned the cover and brushed carefully through the yellowing pages. He knew to handle his mothers books with great care. She had allowed him to examine her small library for some few weeks now… since he had discovered that she too had a collection of many fine books. He turned the pages slowly until he found the one in question. Here he stopped. He gazed up at his mother waiting for her to reveal the mystery of the new alphabet to him…

Eileen ran her fingers across the page as though she could invoke and impart their meaning simply by touch…she smiled down again at her child, this child of light. ‘Yes, this was a sign for her…and for him as well’
