Description Been painting garbage lately- in part to get myself away from painting precious things that I'll fiddle with forever in order to make perfect. It's also enormously gratifying to be able to work without a model or photo- garbage is probably the only thing I can do this with on a formal painting. Everything else would cause me too much anxiety when 'faking' a shadow or piece of reflective metal.

Oil on Masonite, 34" x 48"

I love painting on board, but I can't tell the difference between masonite, birch ply, or particle board once they're primed.

the thing i like...well 3 things i like about it over other woods.

1. the color, if you use a clear primer then you can really take advantage of that dark brown color.

2. the weight, it's nice and light. depending on size, it's pretty easy to move around. it's also pretty stiff.

3. the fact it doesn't soak up primer like most woods.

now i just use it as a drawing board mostly, my oil paints are long gone

I do have a 2x4 panel of the stuff set up with clear gesso ready to go- considering using that for my independent study unit.

I'm really starting to appreciate the soaking up primer- it's really horrible when a quarter of my gallon of gesso gets used on one painting.

yeah, sealing the wood first is a good idea, wood soaks up paint and geeso like a shamwow

Thanks. I took a lot of time with letting them dry and layering new pieces on.

Wonderful idea. No one paints garbage, even thinks about painting it. But you made them strangely pretty, in a way.

I'm trying to keep the paintings from being too romantic or nostalgic, but I do like them pretty. Thank you.

Academically, I see the value of this, but honestly I'm not a fan of garbage. Painted or otherwise.

I just... don't like trash very much. Your painting skills are of course wonderful though. I'm just giving my 2 cents!

No, I'm not mad.

But your comment seemed to suggest something that I do take offense to- the notion that artists are always deeply personally involved and positively attached to their subject matter. While I care about the paintings I've done, I don't personally identify them as beautiful or even worthwhile. The painting isn't about liking or disliking trash. The painting is about the process of painting, and the problem of trash existing in the first place. It's about examining things which we overlook and dislike on purpose.

You're right, I did sound like I was suggesting the wrong thing... Your paintings are always beautiful and as I said earlier, I can understand the point of this academically; painting for painting's sake. The ability to actually paint trash at such a warm level is really impressive. I think the thing that sat a little off with me was that I was expecting something beautiful as the subject matter in relation to the mood, color, and warmth that was used in the piece. Therefore, as an artist I think you succeeded completely by invoking emotion in the viewer. Even though mine happened to be confusion, frustration, and the distaste of trash. bravo

I think you'll learn a lot more from still life's. especially if you use lots of reflective objects. such as glass, copper, or plastics. making them as complex as possible...thats always fun.
