Description This is actually pretty old, it's something that I did on tegaki and really liked, but it was really messy and needed work. Today I imported it to photoshop and started it up again, fixing aspects until I was satisfied, just as a casual thing to distract me from my ten-page paper due friday that I haven't started yet...

I rather like the result.

This is really quite wonderful. The choice of colors in particular is breathtaking. Of special note is the juxtaposition of bright high key colors with low key compatriots. This piece practically jumped out at me from the thumb, and its impact is not dulled much by seeing it larger.

Very moody setting, the silhouette buildings are convincing but really secondary to that amazing light show. I like the little bits of information that reward the closer view, the figure, the "open" sign, street lamps and weathervanes. They're interesting but seem unimportant compared to the big picture.

A beautiful painting, impressive coloring, great sense of mood.

*glomps you* you are too kind to me ; A; I'm really really super glad you liked it, especially all the bits I worked on putting in.

It's a nice piece. You seem to have an excellent sense of the big picture "impact" of your artwork.

I love the cityscape that you've done, the black contrasting with the lightning in the very back and the clouds. You did the sweeping lines of the sky well, I love those. The open sign contrasts very nicely with the overall cool palette that you chose here. And that person sitting on the roof? A very very nice touch, a detail I didn't notice until the third time looking this over, so it's something I can appreciate even more.

The only complaint I have are the olive green boxes on the bottom right corner. I know that's part of the building and everything, but I would have liked it just black, you know? Bright red, then just...black. Like a silhouette. I think the red would pop even more then.

Serain In reply to writerism [2009-04-30 23:22:42 +0000 UTC]

To elaborate on the... boxes on the lower right, I put them there to balance out the composition and ground the buildings, and also to tone down the red sign a lot so people's eyes wouldn't be constantly drawn to it, which looks like it partially worked, as I'm sure it could have become jarring if not softened correctly.

Thank you for your imput :> I appreciate it.

This is gorgeous! Although, to be honest, I think it would have looked better had you used lower opacity/flow brushes. Some of the aspects in this picture, the clouds especially, look like they should be blended smoother, but they're not because of the heavily opaque brushes.

Maybe a brush at 30% flow/60% opacity would have done a better job, I don't know. Also, if you use the alt key you can quickly select a nearby colour whilst still using the brush tool. Hope that helps if you didn't already know! <33 Although you probably did xDD;

Have a nice weekend!

Ah, thank you for the kind critique and suggestion! I do admit that it didn't occur to me to use the flow option while drawing this. It's something that I try to avoid relying on in general, I find it looks better to pick out a separate color instead of just blending normally. On the other hand, I really could have used the tool here... I'll be sure to do it if I ever use this piece for a portfolio or something.

And yes, I did know about it xD I just don't use keyboard shortcuts that much in general... I probably should.

Serain In reply to avatarofd00m [2009-05-01 08:20:56 +0000 UTC]

Are they really that jarring? They're pretty dark already, a lot of this picture is. The contrast makes them lighter though....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

avatarofd00m In reply to Serain [2009-05-01 19:29:07 +0000 UTC]

Jarring is the wrong word, I think. It's not so much a punch to the face as a pebble in the shoe, if you get me. It doesn't break the picture or anything, it just seems out of place.

C-2-158 In reply to Serain [2009-05-01 16:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Must be a long story...
Anyway I was going to say, if you going for a 'graphic design look' you got it 100%, the digital editing is rocking. If your going for an Illustrative look you got it 80%. You need a strong concept beyond visual aesthetic to make your image truly interesting as an illustration. Smart choice with the management. There is actually some money there.

Oh man, again, gotta admire your ability to use basically only one color, but use so many tones on the spectrum that it creates such a bright and deep looking piece. I usually don't think of green when I see clouds, but the hints you put in are a really nice touch! And I like the 'OPEN' sign for some strange reason XD

i really love it, you have a great vision, the only thing i can think of is adding a cigarette to the mans hand, so that you see a little glowing ember on the end of the cig. just to help separate him from the buildings a slight degree.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serain In reply to jadewraith [2009-05-01 08:02:36 +0000 UTC]

....xD ironically enough, there IS a cigarette in the man's hand. It's near impossible to see when I resized the drawing though, but realistically, I thought that it would be impossible to see an ember on it, though I did consider it, it was a good idea.

I second what the guy up there said, I cant find words to describe how awesome I think the clouds are.
Seems like I could stare at this pic for a good hour without being tired of it. Am I going crazy or do I see people standing on top of those buildings? (Well there is at least one I can confirm for sure)

Anyhow, pretty amazing color choice Serainlove, Im proud of you .

You know the holy grail of art: have people look at it for longer than you to create it. EVERY DAY I GET CLOSER TO ACHIEVING IT!

There's only one that I intended xD all the 'others' were achieved through extremely large unwieldy tegaki brushes.

Thank you baby. This was mostly made during my "I will use strange colors for everything and it will look cool!" phase. Even when I went back to this one... it still looked cool. I guess I was lucky, hah ha.
