Description This is serious picture.

Previous version: theangryfishbed.deviantart.com… (Wily the F4f Wildcat also got a redesign as well).

Wily flies over the surface of the water with his tail-hook partially skimming the water hoping to snag a delicious fish for lunch, lets hope he snags a big one. He'll continue this until he has enough fish to fill up his tank.

Facts: Small radial-styled aircraft are Piscivores. Which means they primarily eat fish, but each species have a different technique of getting their food. They're still opportunists so they can consume other prey items like; Seals and other mammals if manageable.
Β
Sea based Aircraft: They're a species of aircraft that live close to the ocean and are used in different countries Naval Forces (ex: US and Japan). They have a special adaption that assists them when they go out forging for food, it's their tail-hook. They fly low and slow with their tail-hooks extended partially submerged in the water. The tail-hooks are usually brightly colored to help lure fish to the surface. When a fish hits the hook it reacts incredibly fast piercing through it till it's fixed where it can get loose, the tail-hook is retracted and they fly back to their nests to drop off the food, they make multiple trips before actually consuming their food.
**If a lucky aircraft spots a carcass of a medium-sized prey item (ex: dolphin) on the surface it will take it, though it can't pick it up. Instead it would hook the carcass and tow it to shore, though it usually loses its catch from orcas and sharks that way.
Land based Aircraft: These aircraft usually don't live that close to the ocean so they lack the attributes of their naval counterparts. Instead they catch their fish much like how bears do it during the salmon run, they'll sit near the edge of a stream and wait till a fish is close enough. It'll then use it's propeller to stun it before reaching down and snatching it up. Land based aircraft however do have a varied diet besides just fish, they're highly opportunistic so majority of the time they're stealing kills from other aircraft.
Why are Radial-styled aircraft fish-eaters? Well the engine style they have does not support a very large jaw which is often needed to hunt larger prey items. Instead they have a mouth style similar to a tooth whale or shark depending on the species of aircraft.

Anyway I am done with boring you with text, hope you like the info I provided on my Living Aircraft.

If someone in the the navy actually did this

Hmmm. Β I could use my tail hook for that.

Humans are pretty draconian in making us snag that hook on a wire on the flight deck, especially for something heavy and fast like me. Β That hook is attached to the tail--the tail is erm-- delicate.

technically suppose to be a serious picture but okay.

Ahh sorry about it. But even there, it's an interesting concept for naval living aircraft, getting their own and unique preying method based on their morphology.

That's a clever way to use a tailhook it's like a tail-mounted talon.

Thanks, in my universe that's what the tailhook was primarily used for. What humans used it for was secondary.

Great drawing, the angles are dang well spot on!

The radial piscivore is quite logical, though my personal opinion differs a bit. Radial engined aircraft always reminded me of bulldogs, which are renowned for their jaw strength.

I like your option though~! It corresponds with the Navy's specialized arrester hooks.

SergeanTrooper In reply to ThunderArc [2014-01-03 23:27:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, True but bulldogs don't have anything obstructing their face to prevent them from using that jaw strength.

yeah you do have a point there.

Fishing it is, then~!

They do however have a nasty bite if you're dumb enough to stick your hand inside. like getting bit by a shark but 10x worse.

I certainly agree on that. And people think horse bites are scary!

That redesign was good, since he wasn't a veteran, captured aircraft, or USN fighter.

Fw-190 it's a radial-styled aircraft that isn't used in any navy.

humans can be a prey item for non-captive aircraft but they're not a primary food source. Aircraft are opportunistic like I said.

SergeanTrooper In reply to benracer [2014-01-03 16:38:47 +0000 UTC]

They'll eat it alive or dead. But since they make multiple trips before actually eating the prey is dead.
