Thank you.

The angle of the picture really didn't do the tree justice, I'm surprised people like it so much regardless.

How did a conversation about a masking tape tree come up in a graphic art class??

answer: someone said i like masking tape then someone said i made a rhino out of it and i said there is a super cool masking tape tree on DA and then i described it and then we disscussed it!

Beautiful! Glad you didn't cover the bowl; it makes the tree look natural. This, with the awesome oriental stamp, puts to mind some kind of temple where origami artists study in nature how their stuff should look. Excellente!

looking good.. gives the tree a very spiritual feel.. i can almost feel the leaves flutter .. imagine having a plantation of masking tape trees... what a sticky situation that would be..

today my day has been full of cliches! *sigh*

How much weight do you think one of these could support? I'm looking for something like this for a movie I'm making (probably without the hanging leaves, and painted dark green), but an orange will be suspended from its tip. Any suggestions?

seriouslytwisted In reply to VincentVanGone [2007-02-26 14:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, depends a bit on the scale of the tree and how sturdy the base is. This one is tiny... I'd suggest using some strong, thick wire (about 3mm wide perhaps?) and papier-machΓ© instead of masking tape. Would also be ideal for painting that way.

I wish I could sell these, I just don't think they'd withstand shipping. They're incredibly easy to make so just grab some masking tape, wire and thread and you're good to go!

very cool - a friend and I once did sculpture with masking tape. It was stuffed with ripped up telephone books... cheap materials and fun to work with.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I love cheap materials, they're incredibly versatile. And if it looks like crap atleast you don't feel like crap blowing the bank account on it.

!!! Ah! I love it so much.
I tried to make myself some little trees like this back in November when I saw The Science of Sleep.
I was covering twigs with white string and paint.. and I used paper for the leaves.
It didnt work out at all. But Yours is so beautiful!!
How long did it take you to make?

Is it hard?! You should seriously do a tutorial.

seriouslytwisted In reply to Lilluart [2007-02-13 05:03:09 +0000 UTC]

I decided on a tree a few weeks back then just before starting on it, I watched The Science of Sleep (and thought, wow cool, must be fate!). I so loved those trees, and that's when I decided to use string instead of wire to hang the leaves.

It didn't take too long to do, I worked on and off and finished it in a day. I used wire (a heavier one for the main trunk, thinner for the twigs), bending and twisted it to get the right movement, then building up the form with strips of torn masking tape. For the leaves, I simply folded masking tape over a piece of string on either end and then cut it out into the shape of a leaf. So, two leaves on one string. Masking tape is really convenient, since it's self adhesive there's very little glueing involved and you can make the leaves and branches relatively quickly. Then I just looped it round the branches, letting it hang in random lengths, and secured it with a bit of glue.

It wasn't hard at all, so please try it out again if you really want to make those trees, and let me know if you're having any issues, I'll try to help.

Ah then it does sound fairly easy, and nothing I'de get frustrated and throw at the wall..
Im going to attempt re-making one.
I have soddering wire whichshould be very easy to use, very bendable. %50 lead and %50 tin, now I just need to find my masking tape.
Thank you so much for the advice, im surley going to try this. :]
You're awesome.

I think I used soldering wire too, so that shouldn't be an issue. Best of luck, let me know if you're having any issues or if you upload any pictures of your tree.

Thanks, I didn't intend to photograph it this way, I was simply trying to find a good lightsource and the light over the staircase seemed like a good idea... which is why this baby is perched on a bannister (I was so paranoid about it falling off).
