Khepri is associated with the dung beetle (kheper), whose behavior of maintaining spherical balls of dung represents the forces which move the sun. Since the scarab beetle lays its eggs in the bodies of various dead animals, including other scarabs, and in dung, from which they emerge having been born, the ancient Egyptians believed that scarab beetles were created from dead matter. Because of this, they also associated the Khepri with rebirth, renewal, and resurrection. Indeed, his name (kheper in Egyptian) means to come into being.

Osiris
Osiris is one of the oldest gods for whom records have been found and first appears in the Pyramid Texts around 2400 BC, when his cult is already well established. Osiris is the oldest son of the Earth god, Geb, and the sky goddess, Nut as well as being brother and husband of Isis, with Horus being considered his posthumously begotten son. He is usually depicted as a green-skinned pharaoh wearing the Atef crown, a form of the white crown of upper Egypt with a plume of feathers to either side.

Apep
As the personification of all that was evil, Apep was seen as a giant snake, crocodile, serpent, or in later years as a dragon. He had an alliance with Set and between the two of them would cause all kinds of problems. Apep was always the enemy of Ra, and he just got worse when Set came over to the dark side.
In a bid to explain natural phenomena it was said that occasionally Apep got the upper hand. The damage to order caused thunderstorms and earthquakes. Indeed: it was even thought that sometimes Apep actually managed to swallow Ra during the day, causing a solar eclipse, but since Ra's defenders quickly cut him free of Apep, the eclipse always ended within a few minutes.
Apep was not so much worshipped, as worshipped against. His defeat each night, in favour of Ra, was thought to be ensured by the prayers of the Egyptian priests and worshipers at temples. The Egyptians practiced a number of rituals and superstitions that were thought to ward off Apep, and aid Ra to continue his journey across the sky.

So, no, there is nothing wrong.

Actually, you could call him either. A lot of Egyptian mythical characters have variations on their names: Selket/Selqet/Serket, Sobek/Sebek, etc.

What's ironic is, Set actually defended Ra from Apep before he was demonized.

Set wasn't demonized. He had always been the god of chaos, desert and evil.

Though I suggest Anubis refer to him as "dad" because he is his son... or are you making him a son of Re?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ServerusTare In reply to marmoki [2008-04-10 22:22:48 +0000 UTC]

Because there is such variation in the mythology, Anubis could be the son of just about anyone. I was tempted for a while to make him the son of Set, as he is in some legends, which would have lead to some interesting family conflicts, but in the end I decided it would be better to make the genealogy intentionally vague and that way I wont have to deal with problems in the myths...
Though sometimes I am forced to make a decision, but when that occurs, I usually aim for the most popular interpretation.

And besides, some people do refer to their fathers as "Sir."
