Description I'm kicking off my Capstone Project with a whole lot of environment studies. I'm next to clueless when it comes to drawing and designing landscapes so I figured this is the place to start. Hopefully in the coming weeks I'll be able to break off from photo studies and actually design some of the environments that appear in From the Ashes.

From the Ashes (working title) is an original fantasy story and joint effort between myself and a friend of mine since 2011. It's still in development but I've always wanted to flesh out the visual aspects of the story- so I resolved to make concept art for FTA via my senior Capstone project (Capstone = thesis in project form). Personally, it's a big undertaking because a) I don't know how to draw? and b) I plan to make at least ten drawings for the project a week- an achievement since usually my drawing count is a resounding 0. Next week I plan on tackling civilizations and the dreaded architecture. Wish me luck!

UUUUGGGHHHHHH! The one with the cliff over the forest is SOOOOOOOOOOOO good! The sunlight on the rock is just amazing! And the fog is a wonderful touch, the whole thing is just dripping with atmosphere! I'm in the same boat, drawing and designing landscapes is my Achilles heel XD I should probably do some practice like this

Pfft I need to do more practice too XD; I basically did this one thing then stopped. It's true as hell that if you don't draw for one day, it shows >>
Thanks so much! All it takes is a reference photograph XD I highly recommend Google Earth too, people upload their images from around the world.

Thank you!
Honestly I think next to anyone can draw like this, it's just a matter of how much time is put into the piece. And the more frequently the person practices the quicker the process/understanding becomes. That's my theory anyway XD You could definitely do something like this!! It just takes butt loads of practice and patience :'D

These are solid! Even if referenced from photos, great work. Architecture is rough, I believe in you!
We wish you all of the luck, I would love to see your guys story as a comic.

This is the kind of environment work I need to get started on. Iiiiif I ever finish commissions...

Thanks Jen! Architecture really does scare me XD But maybe I'll be able to figure it out with the help of references. And then what's more mind-boggling is stylizing architecture/environments. It just makes me realize how much more I have to learn.

I hope you get some time to! Some of these I did in the morning before I went to school.. so small down times like that can definitely be taken advantage of. Normally I'd be scrolling through tumblr or youtube >>

Architecture scares me too. Its dangerous to go alone, so take reference. There is nothing wrong with referencing, never feel discourage by needing reference to make a picture the way you need it/picture it. Also thumbnailing is great, which I see you're doing so thats good!

Thanks! I'm almost done with my commission storm.. I should really be doing drawing daily stuff again just work has been killing me, aaand swtor. I've started playing swtor again which may be a bad thing, haha.

I took tumblr off my bookmarks bar so I would stop getting lost in it. I turn the internet off on my tablet when I'm working (unless I'm streaming) just to get me to stop doing that stuff. Its hard, but it helps top take away those distractions as much as possible, even the simple act of taking that one-click-tumblr button has stopped me from being on that website almost completely (excluding posting)

Yeah, today I spent time building up some of my references. Hopefully once I dive in and fail a few times it'll get better in the long run XD; and I found a few tutorials that could help. But perspective man... it's a bitch.

ahaha gotta have the time for SWTOR XD You gotta do what you gotta do to decompress after work. Unless SWTOR is the thing killing you.Β

Haha, I had tumblr and dA off my hot bar for awhile and recently added dA back again. It does help me to stay off tumblr cause I have to type it in- then again I only need to first couple of letters so it isn't that bad
But I can definitely see how badly social/entertainment sites cut into my free time I haven't perfected the art of drawing despite not feeling like drawing (the whole motivation game).Β

SWTOR isn't killing me, its fueling me. I want top draw... so many Jedi :U

Yeah Social media is... I like it and hate it, I guess that's most people though.

Deer I am probably just as much of a beginner at this as the next person.
Β However, I am a veteran at being a beginner so if there's anything I can help with I'd gladly help XD

omg XD good luck haha, you have the entire world to canvas
Though Google Earth is really useful for finding pictures of nature because people upload pictures they've taken in remote locations and what not. So all you have to do is go to the location in Google Earth and their images pop up at the bottom. I'll probably need to do that to scope out the geography I need to reference XD;
Pfft I'm glad you're here to back me up XD

Hahah sounds like fun (:
Some of my biggest inspirations for backgrounds come from small pretty environments in games like Morrowind and Skyrim, even Assassin's Creed has some beautiful views. Β And now from the Witcher, I love some of the designs and they give me good ideas for stuff like lighting.

sevenluck In reply to RocCenere [2016-01-19 07:22:24 +0000 UTC]

Ooh yeah, those games definitely have awesome lighting and environments. AC: Black Flag has gorgeous settings- I had to stop and admire the environment on several occasions XD And I think they'd be useful for perspective with buildings too >>
Thanks for the tip! I guess it's... an excuse to watch more LP's as I draw XD
