When everyone thinks of Mordor, they think of the volcanic ashlands around Udun and Gorgoth. So it's a shock to movie watchers to see the lush fertile areas around the Sea of Nurnen as Tolkien depicted them.

But it was Tolkien who wrote that the area around Nurnen was particularly fertile.
He wrote that it provided around half of Mordor's food supply, with the other half coming in from Rhun.
