Description ah! what a cutie! This is the Selkie, the northerly counterpart to the merrow species of Ireland! In the water, kelpies appear as harbor seals, spotted seals, sealions, or harp seals. On land, they "shed" these forms, and appear as completely human, only noticable by their dark hair and eyes.
As they go about their land business, they must leave their abandoned seal skins completely alone. Anyone who finds these skins can lay claim to the selkie, and there is many the legend of selkies being forced into marriages with mortal men and bearing children who would go on to become formidable sailors, pirates, and explorers; for the descendants of selkies are excellent swimmers and are immune to drowning!
Selkies are always written as sweet, docile, gentle, and friendly creatures, who would be inclined to rescue the drowning and guard sailors against storms :-D
