"So" asked curious one of the two farmers to the bard, who was lazily plucking the lute under the shadow of a tree.
"Yes?"
"Are you a male or a female elf?" said the farmer. They have been taking bets, because as their grandmother said: "When elves are wearing clothes, how can one really tell?"
The Mystery bard shrugged.
"Does it matter?"
"Yes, of course!"
"Why?"
"Otherwise..." the two farmers said, but not wanting to tell it was for a bet. "well... because... uh... you know!"
"I'm not one of your sheeps. I will not sleep with neither of you!" said the bard with a laughter.
A Dwarf folk tale:
In a field one summer's day an Elf was frolicking about, playing music and singing to its heart's content. A Dwarf passed by, bearing along with great toil a sack of grain he was taking to the Mine.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Elf, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Dwarf, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Elf; "We have got plenty of food at present. I have lived about a hundred winters, and nature had always provided" But the Dwarf went on its way and continued its toil.
One bright day in late autumn a family of dwarves were bustling about in the warm sunshine, drying out the grain they had stored up during the summer, when a starving elf, his lute under his arm, came up and humbly begged for a bite to eat.
"What!" cried the Dwarves in surprise, "haven't you stored anything away for the winter? What in the world were you doing all last summer?"
"I didn't have time to store up any food," whined the Elf; "I was so busy making music that before I knew it the summer was gone."
The Dwarves shrugged their shoulders in disgust.
"Making music, were you?" they cried. "Very well; now dance!" And they turned their backs on the Elf and went on with their work. Then the Elf knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.
(Yes, the dwarves took some existing fables and changed the animals for Dwarves and Elves. Even when sometimes it makes little sense, but they find fun in that as well)
