Mega Steelix for the Steel Type collab hosted in by .

RNG has been oddly kind to me lately and I got another Pokémon I have been wanting to draw properly. Needless to say, I was both overjoyed and crying silently because I knew that this one would turn out to be at least as big of a killer Giratina was. Or worse. I think time wise I managed to spend less on Steelix than Giratina, believe it or not, but the level of detail felt crushingly higher. I feel like I learned a thing or two since Giratina so I managed to clear this one honorably. But it was one hell of a work. I'm making a booklet of my Pokémon designs and I wanted Mega Steelix to be in it so it was a race against time and I squeezed through 9 long hours through the night to finish this. Worth it. I'm really happy to have this done.

I really like Mega Steelix but oh god it's design is dumb. I mean, I love the idea, the crystals and geodes and the floating rocks. But it is so incredibly dumb-looking with that shovel face. I solved mine by basing the head on a wide headed snake with some frills on the lower jaw. The rest of my interpretation is based on the idea that Steelix's scales develop into something very, very similar to rocks and minerals in its habitat, very likely through Steelix ingesting the minerals. Some minerals cause crystal-like spikes and some scales may wear and tear as Steelix moves, revealing colourful geodes. The floating rocks are probably magnetic minerals that float around the head-neck area. I thought Steelix can either generate a magnet field for whatever purpose, perhaps for defense or attracting minerals or other things, or it stores magnetic minerals in its body, around the head-neck area.
