Blood trickled over her shoulders, stained her fingers and matted her hair, plastering the strands to her bare torso with smears of red. The blood was warm but the air was cold, and under her hands the floor felt unbearably so against her feverish skin. It was hard to stay aware, hard not to just give in and give herself over to the blessed oblivion of unconsciousness, but...

The nub of the second wing broke the skin and she flinched forward, gasping as her fingers clawed reflexively at the dresser drawer she had struck when she had fallen. Almost over. Clenching her teeth, she forced herself to take one breath, and then another as the wing slowly continued to push through.

'...I can't do this on my own, Des...but once I'm gone, you're all that's left...'

She closed her eyes tightly, holding on to those words. All that's left. He had died to give her a fighting chance against the odds that had overwhelmed him, given her the gift of his wings so that she might make the last stand with a hope of succeeding...

This pain was hers. Her burden. And his final gift to her.

She gritted her teeth, willing herself not to scream as the wing forced its self clear of her back.

Yes, this was her burden. But for Garren, she would willingly carry it until the end.
