Description Shouldering his backpack, Keran sighed as he glanced around his house. He had only been here for 24 hours, and now he was leaving. Despite that, he still felt like he was leaving home. His bag was full of everything that he thought he would need, from extra food and supplies for him and Demron, to an extra set of clothes (just one, he was going to be doing a lot of walking and wanted to travel light), to a map of the Kalos region in case he got lost (which, with his sense of direction, was guaranteed to happen at least twice). Grinning, he shook his head and laid his hand on the doorknob.

“Keran, wait.”

Pausing, he turned around and frowned in concern. His mom was standing behind him, a box clutched against her chest. Tears were still brimming in her eyes, and it had been years since he had seen such emotion in her face.

Taking a shaky breath, she laid the box down on the counter. “This belonged to your father. I had always hated this old thing, told him to get rid of it so many times, but he was stubborn. Anyway, I want you to have it.” Wiping her eyes, she pushed the box towards him.

Glancing down at Demron, who’s brown eyes were fastened on the box like glue, Keran shrugged. Opening the box, his breath caught in his throat. Folded up with expert care was a full sized grey leather trench coat. Picking up the heavy coat, he gave it a shake, the folds rippling down to the floor. “Oh, Mom, I…….” Opening the coat, he brushed his hand down the soft fabric liner. “I…….I can’t take this?! This is too much.”

Sniffing, Grace simply smiled. “I was furious when he bought it. Spent almost all the money he had on it, but he was adamant about wearing it. Said that if you were going to be traveling around, you should do it with style.” She sighed. “Take it. Your father would want you to have it, and it’ll keep you warm when it gets cold outside. It’s a little long, so I hemmed the bottom and sewed it into place, so you don’t trip over it.”

As Keran gazed in awe at the heavy coat, closer inspection revealed its age. There were places where there had been tears in the leather, sewn back together with such skill that a first glance wouldn’t have even noticed them. The same went for the edge, were frayed pieces had been repaired to form a uniform line. Glancing inside the box, he saw a matching grey belt folded in the bottom, its silver buckle gleaming beneath the kitchen light. Swallowing, he dropped his backpack to the ground, slipping off his jacket, and careful pulled the trench coat on. It was heavy on his shoulders, but other than that it fit perfectly. Moving to stand in front of the mirror, he noticed with satisfaction that the bottom seemed to billow slightly around his ankles. Popping the collar, he grinned as he looked at himself from head to toe. Dad, you were right. If you’re gonna travel, do it in style. “Mom…….I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”

Smiling, Grace grabbed the belt from inside the box and threaded it through the trench coat’s belt loops. “You're welcome. Unlike your father, it looks good on you.” Turning him around to face her, she wiped away the tears that were threatening to spill down her cheeks. “Oh, you look so handsome.”

Smiling wryly, Keran folded the collar of the coat back down. “Aw, come on, Mom, you’re gonna make me cry too.” Drawing her close, he gave her the tightest hug he could. “I’ll be alright, Mom.” he whispered in her ear, and he felt a slight wetness fall against his neck.

A tugging sensation at the bottom of his coat made them both look down, and Grace had to laugh. Demron was holding the hem of the coat, his eyes wide and wanting. “No, I haven’t forgotten you, Demron.” Crouching down, she lightly hugged the Spiny Nut Pokemon, ruffling his spines. “Now you look after my boy, okay? Keep him out of trouble.”

A serious smile on his face, Demron mimicked Keran’s salute. “Chespin!” he chirped, making Keran chuckle. Stuffing his old jacket into his backpack, he pulled the straps over his shoulders and let Demron clamber up his arm. “Alright, I’m heading out.” he said, his voice wavering as he tried to keep a straight face. It was much harder than he had thought it was going to be. Turning, he opened the door and walked outside. Taking a moment to stop by Rockburn, Demron standing on his backpack while holding his head, he patted the Rhyhorn’s head one last time. “Wish me luck, Rocky.”

The bulky Rhyhorn opened its eyes and glanced at the teen. Rising to its feet, it turned and lightly butted Keran with its head, almost knocking him on his butt. “Rooooooaaaaaagh!” The bellow was deafening, and Keran chuckled.

A laugh from behind him made him turn around, and Grace smiled from the door. “I guess Rockburn wanted to give you a big send-off.”

Grinning, he slapped the Spikes Pokemon on its broad face. “I’ll miss you too, buddy.” Turning, he tossed a salute at his mom. “I’ll be in touch!”

Smiling, Grace waved to him. “Take care of each other!” She chuckled as he walked away, Demron waving his little paw goodbye. Wiping away her tears again, she sighed and closed the door.

-

Striding through Aquacorde Town, Demron gazing about in wonder, Keran was in high spirits. A gentle cool breeze was blowing across the river bridge, although he couldn’t even feel it through his trench coat. Coming to the end of the bridge, he grinned and reached up to ruffle Demron’s spines. “Well, here we go buddy.”

Chirruping in excitement, Demron slid down Keran’s arm and leg, and rushed forward, almost disappearing in the tall grass that marked the town limits. Chuckling, Keran followed at a leisurely pace, confident that the Grass type would still be able to find him. A small stream was flowing alongside the footpath, its music lending a calm aura to the place.

An aura that was abruptly shattered. “Pipidgey!” came a shriek through the air, making Keran snap to attention. A commotion was rustling the grass a little ways ahead, and he hurried forward, where Demron and a Pidgey were scuffling in the dirt. “Demron! Hey, buddy, hang on there!”

Shoving the angry bird Pokemon away from him, Demron scowled at her. “Chechespin!” As Keran looked over the Pidgey he grinned. “Well, well. Looks like we’re getting started early. Okay buddy, you’re up!” Smirking, Demron rushed forward, his paws clenched into fists.

Stroking his chin, Keran quickly considered his options. Pidgey is a Flying/Normal type, I know that. Grass isn’t strong against it, but Demron’s Vine Whip is pretty powerful. Better go with something a little gentler, since this bird doesn’t look so tough. “Demron, use Tackle.”

Fluttering its wings, the Pidgey lofted itself into the air and surged forward, even as Demron pounded the dirt with his clawed feet. The two Pokemon charged at each other, unflinching in their determination.

When they collided with each other, Demron won out with ease, almost instantly reversing the Pidgey’s course, sending the Tiny Bird Pokemon tumbling along the ground. Grinning, Keran dug into his backpack, pulling out one of the spare Pokeballs his mom had packed. Rising to his feet, he noticed that the Pidgey was struggling to its feet, shaking its head. Thinking quickly, he hurled the empty ball forward, watching as it bounced off the ground next to the Pidgey. The Tiny Bird barely had time to glance in surprise at the sphere before it cracked open, absorbing it in white light and clamping shut. Rocking slightly on the ground, the Pokeball made a soft click.

Walking over, Keran crouched down and picked up the Pokeball. Grinning, he glanced at Demron. “Well whaddya know, buddy. We caught our first new teammate.”

“Hello? Who’s there?”

Jerking his head, Keran glanced up and looked around. Spying Serena and Shauna, he stood up in surprise. “Hey guys. What’s up?”

The pair of girls slowed to a stop in front of him. “We thought we heard a battle going on nearby.” Serena asked nonchalantly.

Grinning, Keran tapped the button on the Pokeball in his hand, releasing the newly caught Pidgey. “You might say that.” he chuckled, holding out his arm for the Tiny Bird Pokemon to land on. “I think…….I’m going to call you Seera.”

Peeping in response, Seera ignored the proffered arm and fluttered down to peck at the ground. Shauna stared at the dirt-brown bird, completely awestruck. “Oh, wow! You already a new Pokemon? Serena was just showing me how to catch Pokemon. Her parents are really strong battlers.”

Rubbing her arm, Serena glanced at the ground uncertainly. “Yes, well, I did learn a lot from them, but…”

Frowning, Keran bent down to allow Demron to climb back up onto his backpack. Hmm. I wonder…..Finally, he grinned. “Hey, that’s cool. My parents taught me a few tricks too, but it’s nothing like learning on your own.”

Smiling shyly, Serena shook her head, as if clearing something from her mind. “Where did you get that coat? It looks quite nice on you.”

Smiling broadly, Keran ran his hand down the edge of the trench coat. “It’s a going-away gift. It used to belong to my dad. He said that if you’re going to go traveling, then you should do it in style.”

Perking up, Shauna took a few steps closer. “Hey, we didn’t see your dad when we were over. Was he out or something?”

The sudden question caught Keran off guard, and both girls noticed the unnatural silence that fell over him. After a moment, he smiled. “Heh, no. Dad’s back in Johto. But…..I still keep in touch.”

Serena gave him an odd look, pondering the meaning of his words. She had only known him for less than a day, but this was the first time she had seen him as anything other than laid-back and easygoing. Eventually, she decided that it was not her place to enquire, and turned to Shauna. “Shauna, why don’t you practice what I showed you. I’m going to go on ahead, Tierno and Trevor are meeting us in the forest. You will be joining us, Keran?”

Grinning, Keran nodded. “Yeah, I’m right behind you. See ya soon.”

As Serena walked away, Shauna bounced on her feet. “That’s really cool that your dad gave you that coat. Anyway, I gotta go. I’m gonna throw a ton of Pokeballs, and catch a bunch of Pokemon.” And with that, she turned and bounded away.

Keran remained standing there for several moments, then released a breath that he didn’t know he had been holding in. “Smooth.” he muttered to himself, then grinned as he felt Demron tapping the top of his head. “Yeah, I hear ya Dem. We’re going, just a sec.” Settling down on one kneel, he whistled. “Seera, come ‘ere.”

The Pidgey raised her head and looked at him, then fluttered over to stand in front of him, her head tilted to one side. Exuding as much calm as he could, Keran offered his hand. “My name is Keran. This is Demron, and if you’re willing, you’re going to be a part of our team now, Seera. We look out for each other, and we’re going to see amazing things together, I know it. So whaddya say? You want to join us?”

Staring up at him, the Pidgey seemed to consider his words. “Pidgeeeeeey” she cried, and jumped into his hand.

-

Dead leaves. That was the first thing that occurred to Keran as he walked down the path of Santalune Forest, the smell of dead leaves. It was omnipresent, filling up his nostrils and seeping everywhere. One wouldn’t expect that the smell of something rotting to have a calming effect, but nonetheless that was what was happening.

Demron, naturally, looked like he was having the time of his life. Dancing through the dappled pillars of light that penetrated the forest canopy, the Grass type was in his element. The sight of it was enough to make Keran smile.

“Keran!”

Stopping at the sound of Shauna’s voice (which was rapidly becoming familiar now), he glanced behind him. The hyper girl bounced up behind him, smiling happily. “Hey, mind if I stick with you for a bit?”

Grinning quizzically, Keran scratched the back of his head as he kept walking. “Yeah, sure, if you want. Why though? With Li’l Froakie with you, you’d be fine on your own.”

Shrugging, Shauna began skipping alongside him. “I dunno, you just seem like somebody that stuff happens around. I mean, you’ve already caught one Pokemon.”

Keran opened his mouth to answer, and promptly shut it as something heavy crashed into the top of his head. “Ow!” Rubbing his head, he watched as a green blur spiralled through the air and landed on the path in front of them, revealing itself as a Pansage.

Shauna simply giggled. “See? Told ya. Stuff happens around you.”

Rolling his eyes, Keran called out. “Demron, Tackle this joker.”

The thicker grass alongside the path rustled, and Demron charged out at full speed, a determined expression on his face. The Pansage turned and narrowed its eyes, Leering at the Spiny Nut Pokemon. A shiver ran down Demron’s back, but he remained undeterred, slamming into the rival grass type.

Rolling with the impact, the Pansage coughed and made a pouting expression, making Demron scuff the ground uncomfortably. Keran simply grunted. “Must be a Play Nice attack. Demron, Tackle, one more time.”

Again, the Grass types collided, and Keran dug out another empty Pokeball, tossing it in the Pansage’s direction. Within seconds, the Grass Monkey Pokemon was caught.

Grinning, Keran picked up the Pokeball. “Heh. Welcome to the team, Pansage. You’re going to be Mintel.” Hearing a giggle, he glanced over at Shauna, who was innocently rocking on her feet. “What?”

She just shrugged and resumed skipping along the path. “Nothing. It’s just nice to know I’m right.”

For a moment, Keran watched her, then shook his head and followed. “Crazy girl.”

Walking along in relative silence, save for Demron’s occasional chirrups as he found something that seized his attention, Keran appreciated the companionship. Shauna would hum a tune as she walked, her eyes flickering around like she was taking in everything around her. Everything about her exuded happiness and joy.

Eventually, Keran’s curiosity got the best of him. “So, what’s your deal?”

Blinking in surprise, Shauna looked at him. “What do you mean?”

Grinning, Keran stooped down to let Demron scamper up his arm. “I mean, what are you doing here? I know that we’ve got the Professor’s task and all, but what are you hoping to get out of this journey?”

Tapping her finger to her mouth as she thought, Shauna finally smiled. “Memories.”

Chuckling, the taller boy stopped and fixed her with a puzzled gaze. “Memories?”

“Mhmm.” Reaching her hand up, she started drawing imaginary shapes in the canopy. “I mean, Kalos is a huge place. We’re gonna get to see so many new things, so many new Pokemon and people. I know the others have their goals, but somebody has to remember it all.” Smiling serenely, she spun around to face him. “Besides, everybody loves memories when they’re good ones. They’re what we look back on when all the exciting stuff is over.”

Staring at her, Keran grinned. There’s more to this girl than just a bubbly personality. he thought. “That’s pretty cool, Shauna.”

Giggling, she reached into her backpack. “That’s why my parents bought me this camera. So that I can take pictures of everything I see, and all the things that we do. When I’m done my journey, I’m going to put together a scrapbook of them all.” She looked at him. “What about you? What are you looking to get out of this journey?”

Keran opened his mouth, but was interrupted by a shout from up ahead. “Hey guys!” Both trainers looked ahead, and saw Tierno waving at them from just off the path. “Come on, we were just taking a quick rest break.”

Perking up visibly, Shauna rushed over, Keran following close behind. Arriving in a small campsite, they saw that Serena and Trevor were already seated, enjoying some berries and sandwiches with their Pokemon, Serena’s Fennekin Magi seated in her lap, a Pikachu squatting on its hind legs beside Trevor, and a Corphish digging its large claws into a food dish. Serena glanced up at the new arrivals, smiling. “Hello. Shauna, were you able to catch any new Pokemon?”

Pouting as she flopped down, the girl shook her head. “No. They keep running away before I can catch them. Keran caught a Pansage though.”

Shrugging, Keran smiled as Demron jumped down from on top of his backpack while he took a seat. “It wasn’t a big deal. Hey, I’ve got a question for everyone.”

Sitting down with a sandwich beside the Corphish, Tierno grinned. “Go for it. Awesome coat by the way, dude.”

“Thanks. It's a gift.” Falling silent for a moment, Keran watched as a leaf spiralled down out of the canopy. “What are all of you hoping to get out of this journey? Like, what’s your big goal?”

Laughing, the hefty trainer patted Corphish’s head. “That’s easy for me. I’m gonna put together the best Pokemon dance crew in all of Kalos, and we’re gonna have the best dance moves anybody’s ever seen. Whenever I see a cool move, my feet start moving, I get a beat in my head, and I just gotta go with the flow, you know? It just seemed natural.” Standing up, he grinned as he spun a couple moves off, surprisingly agile for a guy his size. “Just you wait, me n Big C here, we’re gonna be on stage big time.”

Smiling, Keran nodded. “Awesome.” Turning, he gestured at Trevor. “What about you, Trevor? What are you out here for?”

Swallowing nervously, the smaller boy handed a berry to the Pikachu next to him. “Well, I’ve always been fascinated with Pokemon, ever since I was little. When my mom left to start a new Pokemon journey, I had wanted to go with her so badly, but she said I was too young. So, I started learning everything I could about Pokemon. I started spending a lot of time at Professor Sycamore’s lab, cuz it wasn’t too far from my house. And when my Dad left to start his new journey……well, that just made me want to go even more.” He smiled, ruffling the Pikachu’s head, who ‘Chaaaaa’ed in response. “When I met PK here, I was super excited. So, I guess, my goal is to meet as many Pokemon as I can, learn as much as I can, and maybe one day, become a real Pokemon Professor.”

Nodding, Keran leaned back on his elbows and looked at Serena. “And you? What’s your stake in all this, Serena?”

For a long moment, the girl was silent, her hand sliding through Magi’s fur. Her gaze was fastened on the ground, as though she was carefully considering her words. Finally, she raised her head. “My parents are both well known battlers. I grew up constantly hearing stories about their adventures around Kalos, friends they had made. My two greatest friends before I met Shauna and Tierno were my parents starter Pokemon. More than anything in the world, I wanted to get a Pokemon of my own, and go on my own journey.” Her face hardened slightly. “As I got older though, things changed. People started talking about my journey as I approached Trainer age. As I was going to Trainer School, I strived to do the best that I could. Eventually, it wasn’t my best anymore. It was expected of me. All I ever heard was how well I would do compared to my parents.” She glanced around, like she had forgotten the others were there. “Please, don’t get me wrong. I love my parents, and I appreciate all that they taught me in preparation for this journey. I just……” she looked down, her face slightly sad, “I want to be recognized for my own achievements. To surpass my parents, and stand on my own. I don’t want to walk in anyone’s shadow.”

Silence reigned over the group, Serena absorbed in her own thoughts, the others pondering her words. Finally, the silence was broken by a chuckle.

“Heh. You practically took the words out my mouth, Serena. I know exactly how you feel.”

She looked over at Keran in surprise, who was laying on his back, staring up at the canopy. “You do?”

Keran quietly smiled. “Yeah. Feeling like, no matter what you do, or how well you do it, people just treat it like your parents achievement, just because they did great stuff, and you’re their kid, so of course you’d do great too. Back in Johto, my parents were pretty famous. My mom was one of the best Rhyhorn racers in the region, and before that she was a pretty strong battler herself. That’s how my Dad and her met, when they were on their Pokemon journeys. My Dad was an even stronger battler than her, he even made it all the way up to the Elite Four.”

Shauna sat with her chin perched on her hands, completely absorbed. “Waaaaooooooow. Did he win?”

Keran simply chuckled. “Nah, he got creamed in the first round. But still, making it all the way to the League is impressive in itself.”

Listening intently, Serena nodded. “Did he ever try again?”

Glancing at Demron, who had sat down to lean against his side, Keran shook his head. “No. They found out not long after that that Mom was pregnant with me, so they put their careers on hold. Then Mom’s career as a racer started taking off, and…..Dad stayed behind to take care of me. He’d tell me stories of things that happened while he and Mom were journeying together, and sometimes we’d meet people who recognized Dad from his League challenge, or because he was married to Mom.” He smiled. “And afterwords, he’d always say the same thing: ‘Keran, one day, you’re gonna get your own Pokemon, and you’re gonna go out on a Pokemon journey of your own. And I’m going to be walking down the street, and somebody is gonna come up to me and ask, Are you Keran Callahan’s father? And on that day, I’m gonna be the proudest man in the world.’”

Pushing himself up, he ruffled Demron’s spines. “So, yeah, I know how you feel, Serena. Feeling like you gotta prove yourself, stand on your own. That’s why I’m out here too. I wanna do something great, to make that day of my Dad’s possible. That’s why I’m aiming for the Championship.”

Serena studied him for a moment, then smiled, her cheeks faintly luminous in the low light. “Well then. We all have a chance to pursue our dreams now.”

Jumping up, Shauna beamed at the group. “Yeah! And we can all support each other in those dreams! That way, there’s no way we can fail!”

Chuckling in amusement at the girl’s excitement, Keran continued ruffling Demron’s spines. For a start to an adventure, it could be worse.

-

As the group came to the edge of the forest, the fading light of the sun cast an orange glow over the landscape. Stopping for a moment, Keran gazed down the hill at the distant cluster of buildings. Smiling softly, he crouched down and ruffled Demron’s spines, chuckling under his breath at the pleased churring sound the little Chespin made in response. “You know something, buddy? I could get used to this place.”

Standing as the others came up behind him, he grinned and waved. “So, where’s everybody headed now?”

Tierno popped a thumbs up, his large hand clapped on Trevor’s shoulder. “Me n Trev’s are gonna keep looking for more Pokemon. I gotta get more guys for my dance crew, and nobody knows more about Pokemon then my main man here.”

Smiling at the compliment, Trevor looked uncomfortably nervous. “Rrright. Besides, I’ve gotta see what kinds of Pokemon are around here, for Professor Sycamore’s research.”

Rocking on her feet with her hands behind her back, Shauna looked at Serena. “What about you Ser-ser?”

Turning to look at the small city down the hill, the girl gave a determined nod. “Magi and I are going to the Gym, down there in Santalune City. My parents told me that Pokemon Gyms and their Leaders serve as tests for Trainers and their Pokemon, and eight Gym badges are required to challenge the League.” Taking Magi’s Pokeball from her waist, she looked at it for a moment. “It will be our first real test, our chance to prove what we are capable of.”

Grinning, Keran followed her gaze down to the city. “I think we’ll do that as well, but first we’ve got a little training to do, so maybe tomorrow. I wanna make sure that we’re ready.”

Clapping her hands, Shauna smiled. “Me n Li’l Froakie are gonna hang out here, getting to know each other.”

Chuckling, Tierno waved as he left with Trevor in tow. “Don’t forget to catch other Pokemon, Little S. Li’l Froakie’s gotta have some other friends, right?”

“Right!” Waving goodbye, Shauna turned and beamed at Keran. “Well, see ya later Keran. It was fun walking with you.” And with that, she hurried off.

Standing still, Keran had to chuckle. Bending down, he let Demron clamber up his arm. “Not bad at all, Dad. Not bad at all.” he mused as he headed down the path.
