Description Nova Aetas: The Pax Aureliana

With the Crisis of the 10th Century brought to a close, and the world restored by Emperor Aurelian, Rome entered a renewed period of prosperity: the Pax Aureliana.

The deaths of the Sassanid Kings Shapur I and Hormizid I in quick succession, and the rise of the weak King Bahram I, presented an perfect opportunity to strike against the Sassanid Empire, and in 1028 AUC (or 275 Anno Domini) Aurelian launched a campaign against the Sassanids. In March of the following year Aurelian decisively defeated the Sassanids at the Battle of Singara, and then once more in battle outside the walls of Ctesiphon, which he subsequently captured. In the wake of these victories Aurelian established Roman rule over Mesopotamia as Trajan once did, furthermore he overthrew the Sassanid client kings of the Caucasus, including King Artavasdes V of Armenia, formally integrating the region into the empire. The once mighty city of Babylon, having overtime been reduced to a city of insignificance compared to nearby Ctesiphon and Seleucia, was enlarged. A new city was constructed in and around the ancient city which was rechristened as Babylonia Aureliana, set to be the capital of the region. After Aurelian’s death in 1033 AUC the empire’s prosperity continued, however over the next century new troubles began to appear. The growing faith of Christianity, only emboldened by the first Christian emperor Constantine in 1059, clashed with the growing cults of Sol Invictus and Mithras, as well as Neoplatonists, and even other variants and sects of Christians. Emperor Julian attempted to quell the growing chaos, but was assassinated by a Christian legionary in 1117 AUC. Some historians consider this event to be the end of the Pax Aureliana. Though others consider the following Valentinian period to also be included as part of the period.

Nova Aetas is an alternate history and upcoming mod for Crusader Kings III that brings the player to the year 1318 AUC. The mod introduces expansive new cultures, religions, and mechanics to enjoy and explore.
