I think I'd like to ask you a question..... Do you still use square partitions which you show in your Tutorial How To Draw Johnny Depp? [link]
I use the method too. But a friend of mine who has had art college education told me to use this method no more. I know square partition is helpful and an easy way to catch the proportion... but yeah, without it I can do noting=^= I never see a professional sketch book suggest this way. Maybe I should give it up?

This technique is based on a technique the classic Italian painters had used. They watched the object they wanted to paint through a wooden frame in which they had put wires that turned the frame into a grid. So the technique is pretty old.
I'm still using it frequently especially when the perspective is a bit unusual. If it's only a 'normal' portait where the person is facing me more or less directly I can come up with something that works without the grid. But I try to make the drawings to look as realistic as possible. So either I use the grid or at least a ruler.
I know that some people call it 'cheating'. But now that I know more about where it comes from I don't see it as that. It's one way to get perspectives right - and there are many other ways. I never had any drawing lessons at school and I don't own books about the subject, I'm 100% self-taught. I just use what works for me. I think having a teacher or somebody else to ask is a good idea, but at the end you'll always have to decide what works for you and what not.

You're welcome! Feel free to ask whenever you think I can help you.
I think at the end it means: Look around and try a lot of different techniques. That way you will find your way.
