Description It all started with one incident. In their typical arrogance, a military personnel, in the middle of a football match, kicked a student of Dhaka university. Both of them were spectators. The military camp beside the gymnasium playground had been a thorn in the side of the students for a long time anyway. The news of this incidence traveled like fire throughout the student quarters, not only of Dhaka university but also almost all the institutions of higher studies throughout the country. Within hours all hell broke lose. The military dominated government tried to play it rough by beating, arresting and tear gassing the initially peaceful protest marches. But they never counted upon the unity showed by the student communities from every corner of the country. By this time, some of the braver souls of the teaching communities had also joined the movement. When no amount of tear gas and rubber bullets could pacify the movement, the government came to terms with the protesters and withdrew the army camp from Dhaka University premises.

This country owes its independence to the student leaders of ages past. Its continuing freedom and democratic practices are also maintained by the politically and socially active younger generation, most of them active students. Whenever governments, blinded by power, tries to ignore this inherent aspect of the politics of our country, they are reminded that they are appointed, not anointed.......

A shot from one such clash with the police. I couldn't even open my eyes because of the tear gas. The shells dropping everywhere, water cannons smothering the crowd.........it was hard to even maintain a steady arm. That's why most of the shots I took, are of very poor quality. This is one of the better ones. I like the motif with the woman, who obviously has nothing to do with either party........and must go through this zone of clash to her pursuit of daily survival.

Awesome! Looks like oh crap its grainy but it adds to the affect. Or maybe its just the smoke that I am seeing.

I think because its in black and white it gives it that feel of people running but still with action in it.

Nice

I cannot say that I'm an expert when it comes to photography, I’m rather bad with a camera actually, but I can still recognize a picture that have been given some thought (or meaning). See, every photo tells a story, which kind is sometimes hard to understand.

I haven’t read your subtext, which was intended too, it helps me to just look at the art. This pic tells a story of violence, unnecessary violence, from my point of view. Somehow it looks like a picture from a newspaper, taken in the spur of the moment. I like that.

The only critique I have though is that the picture seems to raw if you understand what I mean, not so smooth and easy to follow. That’s the only thing and it’s coming from someone who doesn’t understand a damn thing about photography so don’t take me too seriously.

Thank you for the time and thought that you put behind your comment. I appreciate it a lot. Your critique was actually a compliment for me, because I wanted to bring out that 'raw' feel!

Thanks again.

Well, then that is a good thing

I think that it's important when you are offering critique that you actually put som effort in it I'm glad you liked it.

This image is very powerful, and I really like how you edited it, the scarf the walking woman has around her face looks a little bit strange after it had been edited due to the pattern on it.

shangshaptak In reply to norsehawk [2008-04-10 16:53:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Extremely appreciated. That's actually the back of her head... The scarf's an extension of the 'sari'.......the most common dress used by the women of my country.

Ahh, ok, I could swear I could see eyes there, as well as a few pixels right in the center of her head that kind of looked like the bridge of a nose before it goes beneath what looked like a veil. So, I thought she was walking towards the camera instead of away. Very nice shot regardless.

Thanks for describing it, the whole story adds much to the meaning of the photo itself. It leaves a strong impression, particularlly the woman walking through all that.

This is so powerful.
I love it.
The story behind it is quite amazing too. I can only imagine what it must be like. Australia is mostly free of this sort of extreme stuff these days.
The whole composition is awesome too. So much contrast.

Love love love it!
