Description This picture made me go... Awwwww.

Goliath has really calmed down since his neuter. He used to bolt awake the MOMENT I opened the cage doors. Now, he pretty much stays where he is and just cracks an eyelid.

He looks Awesome in yellow, I must say.
And soon, those embarrassing bald spots around his balls will be gone

Sorry about the late reply. >.< GAH! Um... but... to answer... it really depends where you live and WHO you go to. For example, I used to get my rats neutered for $109 + tax. But my regular vet whom I always go to for neuters now... he charges me $200 per neuter (and that's because I get a special discount). It would be $243 if there was no discount. On the other hand, I know that in other places, you can get a rat neutered for as low as $80 !!!

As for spaying, I've heard $280, I've heard some prices as high as $300... Unfortunately, no vet in my city is willing to spay a rat... so I get mine a "Suprelorin Implant" instead. It's about $240 per rat.

I'm curious; how much did it cost to have him neutered? I'm familiar with feline and canine pricing as my father's a vet. He doesn't normally tend to exotics, though, so I'm pretty clueless there.

Where are you located? I'm in Canada, Ontario, and the vet I used charges only $120. But then again, there's ANOTHER vet in my city who charges $283 for a neuter. Yet ANOTHER vet charges about $220. It really depends on where you are, and who you go to.

The MOST important thing though, is you HAVE to find someone who KNOWS what they are doing. Rats are not dogs, or cats. Your best bet is you interview ALL your local vets, ask if they have a small animal specialist, and ask them what their experience with rats is, and what their procedures consist of and especially what anesthetics they use and how they administer it. If you can't find ANYONE who has experience with rats, then find someone who's neutered rabbits, or guinea pigs before... because they are more similar to rats than dogs or cats.

Good luck!
