I AM SHANNANIGAN... TENTACLE ANNIHILATOR AND RULER OF SILLY ASS PIRATE ZOMBIES!!LOL! This is my entry for CHOW #145 on Conceptart.org. The challenge was to create self portraits as super villains...
So I decided to combine my love of B-Movies, cheesy horror art, pirates, zombies and goofy Scooby-Doo monsters... add in my distaste for that crappy tentacle hentai garbage and this is what I got!

jesus.... your artwork is absolutly amazing. How do you do it so well? Do you scetch it first with paper then use photoshop?

I just recently started drawing straight on the computer with my tablet... like 6 months ago maybe. Up until that point I was drawing and inking by hand, scanning and then coloring on the computer.
I've been drawing women for so long I can manage it (and zombies... LOL!), but for men I still have to do hand sketching first to work out the "bugs".

Yeah thats what I've been doing drawing strait on the computer. I dont have a scanner or a tablet and i use paintshop pro which im told isn't as good for artsy stuff. So basically im doing everything with the mouse so its really hard for me to keep my lines as smooth looking as yours.
Your coloring is amazing too were did you learn too do such amazing coloring?I've tried and tried to get my coloring as good as yours but it just looks like crap.
Thanks again for showing your artwork. You have some real talent. I wish I could draw as good as you.

It just takes practice... and more practice... and even more practice.
My first bit of advice would be to scrounge up the money for either a scanner or tablet. That mouse to draw will hold you back... Scanners are pretty cheap these days and they have the low end "Bamboo Fun" tablet from Wacom that is a decent price and has both a pen and mouse.
Coloring with a mouse is easier than drawing with one. I used a mouse to color forever, but in the year or so I've had a tablet I've improved my coloring 300%. So much more control and detail with the tablet.
I've never used Paintshop Pro... but there is a Freeware program called "GIMP" that I hear people talk a lot about who can't afford Photoshop or Corel. Might be worth checking out since its free.

So awesome to pop on DA and see this little gem waiting for me in the deviations list. Full of awesome. Really wonderful work with the coloring -- it's vibrant enough to make it really interesting and colorful, but not too vibrant to make it look weird. Really, really fantastic stuff, and I love that little snarl on your zombified face!

I tried a few new things here, like the distortion, grainy effect and splatter brushes. Trying to get a little less "clean" with my coloring.

Zombies and Pirates, two great tastes that taste...., well they would taste pretty bad, but they sure do look good together.
And hey, not all cephlapods are bad, some have just fallen victim to the unscrupulous hentai industry. Give the octopi a break.

My stuff is largely brushed aside because I don't do beautiful, realistic Sci-Fi/Fantasy art. But I keep forcing them to look at my Low-brow nonsense.
Art school... life drawing... "professional" quality. HA! Screw that.... Hahaha!

That site is really good for learning.... no question about it. You just have to be willing to take constructive criticism and use it to your benefit.
