Description This painting (done in gouache) was inspried by a prayer card I received in the mail (of a seated Christ done in stained glass).

This painting was not planned. I found myself at my local SCA scribal session with no resources with me. All I had was this card that I kept because I thought the image was just beautiful. Since I like having something to look at when I'm doing these paintings, I thought hmm...what can I do with this?

The seated lady is purely made up, but the image of women pursuing the arts (domestic or otherwise) was not uncommon during the medieval period. Originally I wanted to do this painting in the style of a stained glass window (like the prayer card), but later changed my mind. You can still see the original pencil marks where I was going to indicate the glass panes. Unfortunately, once you lay paint over pencil, you can't erase (learn something everyday).

Thanks, Ambr. It's all in the shading, so I'll have to get going on that shading class I've been talking about teaching.

This is just gorgeousβ€”I am reminded of much of both Byzentine art and the later early medieval art found in so many of the churches in England and Europe. It's really a lovely piece!

Yes, this is stylistically convincing. Medieval art certainly has a nice influence on you! The folds on her dress are amazing.

I'm a big fan of your art!
