Description This tutorial explains how I do digital paintings in Photoshop, but surely it's not the only way possible. This program offers a lot of possibilities, and what you should do is find your own way to use it
Please tell me if you find any English error, I tried my best not to do them but I'm sure there are... -.- And, if you need to know something more about the process of whatever, don't hesitate to ask, I'm here to answer!

Some notes:
- I used the CS3 Extended version of Photoshop, but the tools are almost the same in the other versions.
- The brush I shown has those features: shape dynamics, dual brush, other dynamics.

Some useful shortcuts (I'm pretty sure that not all of them will work in other Ps versions), they're the ones I use most:
ctrl + t: transform
ctrl + d: deselect
While using the brush (b):
alt (keep pushing it while using), you'll activate the eyedropper tool.
x, you'll switch the background colour with the main one.
d, reset the default colours in the palette (black as main colour and white as the background one)
And, as you can suppose, the eraser is e.

Btw, you can find the Thranduil painting here: fav.me/d7te55g

Wow!! Very, very well detailed and explained! (No, no errors; in fact, the phrasing was really perfect!)

You gave a lot of neat tricks, tricks I didn't knew, like to do the colours before the real details. Also, the step where you zoom on each section to perfect it before moving to the next explains why even just a fourth of your drawing was enough to know that it was Thranduil!
I definitively faved it, in the hope that at least one day, I'll have a good tutorial when I'll want to start to learn how to draw.

One thing by curiosity, do you use your computer mouse, or a tablet with a pen?

Great, and thank you! (That's such a relief! )

I think that not just in digital paintings, but in drawings in general, all you have to do is start with a rough sketch and then define it until you're satisfated. And honestly, the more I proceed, the more I enjoy working (my favourite part is adding details!).
AAAND, I really encourage you - and anybody - to try it! It's not so hard if you like it and you practice (almost) every day (as I do after all, but it comes natural )! I remember I used to draw very bad, but after years and years I got pretty better, I should publish a "draw this again" meme to prove this... xD

Tablet! A Wacom Bamboo Manga if you're interested, but I know this model isn't selled anymore, you can look for a Wacom Intuos Manga though, it has the same features but a different layout.
And I think the tablet is the only way to draw well in digital... Moreover if, like me, you own a notebook but not a mouse (so only the mousepad), it would be impossible to work in other ways xD

Yeah... I really want to try, but I just don't have the time, and for now, writing is all I can manage to do, and even then...

Ah yes, the Wacom. It's actually in my to-buy-in-the-future list.
I just wanted to be sure, because, in my experience, it really doesn't work with a mouse, or even a pen on the touch-screen.

I think it's just a matter of priorities, but I can perfectly understand that you prefer writing than trying something about which you're now sure... I'm doing the same procastinating the exercise with Blender

Yes definitely, a pen or a mouse won't help you! Btw when you'll be about to buy it, have a look at Amazon offers, sometimes they're pretty cheap, or try in the second hand shop at Wacom.com

Yeah, I already thought about Amazon instead of Wacom. Sometimes, the original company makes them more pricey than their distributers.

Definitely, for example I bought from Ebay 72 copic at the price of 170€ instead of 250€! - @
