Description I've had a few people ask me about how I went about painting the portraits of Thorin and Fili, so I put together a walk through to roughly explain how things were done.

Like I said in the walk through, this isn't me telling you how to paint. You have to find your own work flow, your own process that will work best for you. But I still hope that it will be helpful for some artists out there

You'll probably need to Full View it, or download it, but be warned, it's a pretty big file so that it can be read properly.

Thorin Oakenshield and the Hobbit are Β© Middle Earth Enterprises
Art is Β© Rachelle Fryatt- DO NOT USE, REDISTRIBUTE OR ALTER IN ANYWAY.

I was wondering do you trace the outline or do you do it free hand?

Your work is amazing

Thank you very much ^^ Everything is all drawn free-hand I'll occasionally match the sketch up to the original photo to see how off everything is, but I never trace anything Β

Great paintings! Thanks for the very useful walk-through, I did not yet start with Photoshop, just bought my first Wacom Bamboo tablet. I will use your walk-through as a guide! I will need a lot of practising first of all!

Do you know of any easy way to flip just one layer? Besides using the transform tool and guessing at accuracy of it?
I've found the option to flip the whole image, but I wonder about just part of it...

Thanks for mentioning flipping it btw. I've totally been forgetting to do that. XD

I've been scratching my brain for the past few days and you know, I'm pretty sure there is a way to do it but I can't for the life of me remember how. I'll try and figure it out and get back to you on that one

And no problem, tis a really handy thing to remember Looking at a traditional piece in a mirror does the same

I've flipped my current image back and forth a bunch today. It's making such a difference. ^^

OHMYGOD, I have to thank you ! I've been using Photoshop for at least 6 years now, and I just NEVER thought about lowering the flow rather than the opacity of a brush... It works so great on skin, even with the most basic ones !

And thanks so much for this whole walkthrough, I love seeing how other artists work and you give some pretty good tips here. Your portraits are really amazing, you captured Thorin's (and FΓli's) face and expression so well... His hair is gorgeous. It's my favourite part of him to draw, I just love that black and white lion's mane !

Hehe, no problem, glad it's been useful for you ^^' Lowering the flow is a relatively new thing that I've started doing too- it was like a light bulb went on
His hair is far too beautiful, and far too much fun to draw XD

oh my gosh... these are beautiful pieces! I discovered Tolkien when Return of the King was about to hit theatres and I've been obsessed ever since. These... are *beautiful* And the Hobbit was beautiful as well...

...and it's so nice to see that after all those years of waiting-- people still adore the movie and story because it's so worth it and worthy of this sort of dedication!!

RachelleFryatt In reply to PepperJDarcy [2013-01-20 13:49:07 +0000 UTC]

I never did grow out of my love for all things Tolkien ^^ It was well worth the 10 year odd wait for the Hobbit ^^

PepperJDarcy In reply to RachelleFryatt [2013-01-21 04:24:38 +0000 UTC]

oh heck! it was so worth the wait. Especially since it meant Martin could play Bilbo!! HECK he did such a good job. I was squealing in the theatre all three times I went to see it-- especially when Bilbo slammed the orc to the ground to save Thorin... and when Thorin hugged Bilbo. It was *MAGIC* I tell you!

And this is late, but congrats on the DD. That's really a beautiful piece!!
