Would it be okay if I used this as inspiration for a helmet on a character in a drawing? Of course I would give credit where it is due.

Do you use a form to get the ridging in the drow armor?

MariRaikou In reply to Sharpener [2012-09-06 20:24:17 +0000 UTC]

So do you clamp those sections together to make it razed like that? I guess I'm asking, how do you make the ridges? If you don't mind me asking.

Sharpener In reply to MariRaikou [2012-09-07 07:56:54 +0000 UTC]

kind of, depends on the leather, some need heated water, some need to be hammered down, som need hardener to stay that way!

As a real medieval time, this would haved been so awesome to be of iron it conferes the head heavy protection

I would haved been a warlord or something in that time, this would haved been my casual mask, no one needs to see the generals face

Prepare the swords men and start looting the unfaithfull

What oz/thickness of leather is it? It looks like 9/10 oz leather. Is the crest human hair? I recently made a mask that is 9/10 oz leather for fighting in Belegarth, but they require 12oz or thicker for armor grade. Would it be possible for you to make one in 12oz? Your work is superb and original. I also love how you stitch most of your work together, instead of going the easy route and using rivets for everything. Stitching just makes the end result so much more amazing Great stuff sir. I'd do more leather working, but I don't have the time or shop as of late to pump stuff out. It'd be awesome to purchase one of these in the future to wear on the field

Sharpener In reply to Scavver [2012-08-14 15:51:24 +0000 UTC]

Never really measured it in ounces. Over here we only define it by thickness or, sometimes, density, and I mainly use 3mm Vegtanned!

Ye, to withstand that kind of stress it needs to be thick and often hardened aswell (especially on the face as there are lots of fragile bonestructuring there. Most easily used tecnique to harden is to briefly boild the leather and quickly set it to its desired shape

Ye, rivets are good for some projects or when a piece needs its layers to bend or such, but otherwise stitching rules!

Scavver In reply to Sharpener [2013-02-08 00:03:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not completely sure, but I believe 12oz is around 4mm. I thoroughly enjoy your work and I am actually working at a Tandy Leather Factory now, so I was interested in perhaps getting your current rates ( prices ) for helmets. I know awhile back you said you just wanted to make enough money to continue doing leather ( I do the same thing ) But I am sure your prices have gone up. I'd really love to support your work and purchase something, plus it'd be cool to have a nice helmet to protect my face ( I fight Belegarth and I need a armor grade helm ) I just got offered to sell my leather accessories to a few stores, put stuff in an art show in a few months, and I still work full time... there's really no time to make a helm Plus, since I work at Tandy, I get business prices on tools, hardware, leather, I could get you some good deals on stuff too Lemme know, it'd be good to hear from you and it's warming up, I need armor soon

I have started into leather working a bit as a hobby (maybe more serious later idk) but I was going to see if you had any tips or designs that you could share to make something such as this ? I am having trouble figuring shapes and designs and how to put them together for my first armor project. I did a bracer but It is a simple shape. not use to making armor and the process for it.

Sharpener In reply to mercc1 [2012-08-14 15:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, helmets are one of the most difficult to do (after gauntlets...) so I would recommend to start of with a mask, because that requires alot less measuring and testfitting then a helmet The only thing that stands out from the original bent shape (if making a basic facemask) is the nose, so there's your first challenge!
