Judging by Lord Transyl, maybe masks were parts of Vladats' culture? They probably wore as much protection from sun as possible and over time it was accepted as appropriate, so Vladat without mask would be cultural counterpart of walking around without shirt or pants. Just a theory.

That would've been an interesting idea to explain why the vampire aliens are wearing masks......... if OV's Anur arc hadn't been secluded to a single "Halloween Town"-ified planet...
