Description So it's no secret to anyone who really knows me that I'm a huge horror fan, and those who know me even better know I have this strange love for the Re-Animator movies and have a crush on Jeffrey Combs (who plays Herbert West).
Since I've been picking up the Army of Darkness vs Re-Animator comics and since Mandy just made me a new Re-Animator livejournal layout I decided to post this.
It's me as 'Miss Re-Animator Babe 2005', I did the sketch of myself in my sketchbook but added colors and bg in photoshop.

wow, I as well am a huge re-animator fan. I have all the Lovecraft movies starring Jefferey Combs (From Beyond, Castle Freak, Re-Animator and Necronomicon) Im actually quite amazed that someone else out there is a Jeffery Combs fan.

Do you read Lovecraft as well??

Anyways, nice pic.

I adore Jeffery Combs, he's such a small and nerdy guy but he's got this strange intensity about him that just makes you notice him no matter what he's in.

Yet I sadly only own 'From Beyond' and all three of the Re-Animator movies, how are Castle Freak and Necronomicon? Where did you find them?

I've read a few Lovecraft stories (my sister own a bunch of the compliation books and loves them all) and they were okay but I find that his constant detail about 'the nothing-ness' sort of drags
Oh the un-speakable horror! You would go mad if I even described it to you!
I can appreciate what he's done for the horror genre though

And speaking of Lovecraft, have you seen Dagon yet?
It doesn't have Combs in it but it's still a great Lovecraft inspired movie, some of the computer fx are laughable but the gore and part where an old man get's skinned alive more than make up for it.
Oh and the lead guy is pretty good as well, not quite Combs but he's pretty close.

Oh and glad you like the picture as well

Yea, I have all 3 reanimator movies as well. Unfortunately Brian Yuzna butchered the two sequels. Only Stuart Gordon knows how to translate Lovecraft to film. And yes, I think Dagon is great. Its definately the most accurate as for as story to film translation goes.

I had to specially order Castle Freak and Necrnomicon from HMV about 3 years ago. Castle Freak is great, its loosely based off 'The Outsider' by lovecraft. Necronomicon is cheesy as sin, but its ok. Its basically 3 short Lovecraft stories rolled into one movie. Jefferey Combs plays HP Lovecraft himself. Its ok. Ill leave it at that.

Ill give them to Steph to lend to you if youd like since I havent been at the school in about 5 months. This is Colby from Vanarts if you didnt know.

The thing about Lovecraft is that he is the horror genre, nobody knows it though.

I have a really nerdy theory that HP Lovecraft inspired JRR Tolkien's character 'Gollum'

Beyond Re-Animator was so hilariously bad, I got a good chuckle out of the re-animated corpse guy who was drinking milk at the beginning of the film.

So Combs plays Lovecraft himself eh? That would be pretty interesting to see... I would be very grateful if you did lend them to me, I promise to take good care of them. I'm guessing that they're on vhs since you said you got them 3 years ago?

Have you seen the The Dunwich Horror? I know that Videomatica down on West 4th carries it and even though it's very very 1970's it wasn't too bad.

So let's hear your nerdy theory on Gollum, I'm quite intruiged now.

Speaking of other writers and Lovecraft, have you ever read any Neil Gaimen stuff? There's two stories that are very Lovecraft inspired in his 'Smoke and Mirrors' short story collection.

I liked Beyond ReAnimator a bit more than Bride. The part where Dr. Hill puts wings on the side of his head was almost enough to make me shut it off.

Sure, Ill give them to Steph to drop off next time she sees you or Hallis. Necronomicon is on vhs and Castle Freak is dvd.

Yea, I have the Dunwich Horror also. Starring 'Al' from Quantum leap. Its ok. And by ok I mean really bad. I managed to sit through it. The whole thing looks a heavily sedated disco party or something.

Well, theres a very early Lovecraft story called 'the beast in the cave'. Its about a tour group going through these underground caves and someone gets lost. Hes missing for I think for a few years or something. Im going off memory here....anyways they go back in the cave a few years later and they find this creature thats incredibly skinny and pale with long stringy hair and walking on all fours. An absolute monstrosity apparently. I instantly thought of Gollum. The Beast in the Cave was written close to 10 years prior to the Hobbit. HP Lovecraft used to write these little stories for magazines back in the 20's and 30's. Right around when Tolkien was writing the Hobbit I bet.

Ive heard of Neil Gaimen, but never actually read any of his stuff.

Aww you didn't like the bat-wings on his head? That part made me giggle hysterically, perhaps I have a weirder sense of humour?

Heavily sedated disco party....that sounds about right.
Are you not a fan of the really bad horror movies?

That's a good Lovecraft/Gollum theory, and it's probably right too. Perhaps Tolkien was a Lovecraft fan?

I love Gaimen's stuff, it's very british (which is a plus in my books, I'm not sure how you feel about English dark humour) but his wit, characters and ideas are awsome.

No no, I love bad horror. But theres two types of bad horror in my opinion. Good bad horror and bad bad horror. Realistically most horror movies are pretty bad. The first re-animator is good bad horror. The following two were bad bad horror. The Dunwich horror was definately bad bad horror. The director didnt have a clue on what was scary and what wasnt. Sideburns and afros are not scary.

But then theres just good horror movies. Like the orignal texas chainsaw massacre. I dont care what anyone says. Thats some scary shit. Theres no fuckin around in that movie. Theres no sillyness, its pure terror. I still have problems sitting through that movie alone. Same with the Exorcist. And the original Romero films. Those are all good too. I think what makes them good is that the directors took them seriously. Dagons good horror as well I think. Definately Stuart Gordons best.

Ok, this is a terible rating system.

I feel like Im preaching. Am I preaching? Ill stop. Its just that I dont know many people who like horror movies so when I do find someone I go off on a rant.

Hmm....Ill check out Gaimen. I have compilation book 'The Horror in the Museum'. Its Lovecraft inspired stories by various authors, I wonder if hes in it? Ive never had a chance to read any of it yet.

The original texas chainsaw was and still is fantastic, I love the part where leatherface just bursts out, grabs that chick and then he's gone again. And 'grandpa', that scene is so creepy!
The exorcist still creeps me out as well, not the pea-soup stuff but her voice and the part where she's flopping around on the bed all out of control.

And you're not preaching, nor ranting so don't worry.

I personally love all kinds of horror movies, I love really good ones (like texas or dagon) but I also love crap, in fact one of my favorite things to do is to rent some really bad horror movies and watch them/mock them with my sister.

Do you usually watch horror movies on your own? Do you force Stephie to watch them at all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zedisdead In reply to shawnibuya [2005-12-14 23:13:04 +0000 UTC]

yea, I generally watch them on my own. Steph will watch them in theatre with me, but when ever I go to put in a horror movie at home, I just get a bunch of pissing and moaning from everyone. The Grudge I also find hard to watch alone. Its not even that great, but theres some good scenes. I like it.

When I was 14-15, me and my friends used to rent a huge stack of crappy movies (jacko, hospital massacre, sleepaway camp...actually the ending of that movie is quite disturbing) and watch them till like 6 in the morning, until we were completely delirious. I remember my parents getting up to go to work and we'd still be watching them. Good times.

Do you mean the japanese version of the Grudge or the American-ised version? I have seen neither...

I LOVED sleepaway camp, the ending was so strange and bizzare. They're re-making that eh?
Like everything else...
sigh
