In which Severian continues to be rotten at distinguishing the gender of anything furry.

Art-wise, I'm really happy that I think I have finally gotten Sev to start looking non-white as opposed to just "really really tan!" Maybe. Possibly. (I guess we'll find out next time he has to stand beside someone who isn't Tareth-pale).

Hurrah for Tareth! Disability Superpowers! Well, perception-of-disability superpowers, anyway. Way to seem harmless and ineffectual, I guess!

Since Sev's hair is green, or at least looks green from here, I'd always assumed he was...not tan, but sort of magic-brown. Tree-ish. Not melanin- ish.

Also Ms. Dirt Golem is a heck of a person to be casting aspersions on a person's form, I gotta say.

Probably not what Tareth was going for. >_> OH WELL THAT WORKS I GUESS

Re: skin colour - Oh huh! I hadn't thought of that as being an option, haha! And yes, you're correct about the colour - his hair is that colour of dark brown that everyone assumes is black, with BRIGHT GREEN tips.

Re: dirt golem - Firstly, I enjoy this nickname greatly. Secondly, it's interesting you should mention this, since she hasn't made any comments about his appearance. c:

Anyone else wondering why someone with scales on their skin is asking so many questions of poor Sev? Not his fault he got partially possessed and has an evil male female moon wolf chasing him. Obviously this is all just a big misunderstanding. I'm sure we they'll all be singing around a campfire together soon.
Also... Way to save the day again Tareth!!!!

*checks spelling and grammar* ... *double-checks, can't find any common tricks for showing speech impediments*

...

Now I can't imagine her voice in my head anymore. D:

Oh no! The font change is the key here -- she just sounds deaf! The deaf accent is also the reason why the aberrant hunters in Chapter One mistook her for being slow; apparently they'd never heard one before.

If you've never heard a deaf accent, Heather Whitestone was the easiest for me to find a good clip of: [link] (skip to about one minute in and they start interviewing her). Deanne Bray ( the blonde lady in Sue Thomas F.B. Eye [link] she starts talking about 28 seconds in) is another good example, with imo a little bit less of an accent than Miss Whitestone. This is kind of how I imagine Tareth to sound. :3

I feel like it would take a lot of mispelling and dialect to portray this sort of sound to the voice accurately, so I chose to use a more childish font when she talks. You can hear her in your head however you want; all that's important is that her voice is different, and no one quite knows how to interpret it because they've never heard a deaf girl talk before.

Well, yes, and I caught on to that almost immediately- it's just that I only realized that I have no idea what a deaf person sounds like when attention was called to her speech impediment. XD

Thank you for the clips, my friend; a very enlightening experience, and it saved me time looking for them.

... Of course, it's pretty close to how I imagined it, anyway, so it's all good.

It's one of those things that you would only notice audibly. Also the text is usually different to show that she's speaking differently. If you've ever heard a deaf person talk you'll notice how they sound a bit echoy like a parrot. That's probably what the guard means by "impediment." However as a reader you can totally miss it since you're not actually hearing Tarenth talk. If the text when she talks was a bit more squiggly then maybe you could get a clearer idea that she doesn't sound like how hearing people do.

Right, I got the text, it's just that the guard's comment made me realize that I didn't really know HOW, exactly, she's supposed to sound.
