Yours truly, back in the year 2000, a mere twelve years old, still sporting braces to tame my overbite at that time.

Mom took this photo of me standing in front of UV type motorcar No. 3809 at Móricz Zsigmond Körtér in Budapest, as it was parked on a siding. Normally, the destination sign would be sitting on those prongs, but in this case, it states "Not carrying passengers due to technical reasons". A simple "Not in service" would have also sufficed, but hey, why not inform passengers more elaborately, eh?

What I love most about this picture: While much of the once extensive UV fleet was scrapped, this car, along with 3800, was saved and bought by VEKE (city and suburb transportation association) and was preserved in working order. What are the odds of that!

This car could also briefly be seen in the famous 1969 Hungarian movie "A tanu" (the witness), where the protagonist is seen squeezed into a completely overcrowded tram, hanging in the door while it was already moving. Apparently, that wasn't staged for the shoot, but filmed on a regular weekday in Budapest. There's even a short clip of that on YouTube, but you can only make out the number of the trailing motorcar No. 3810, not that of the leading 3809. I'd still believe the claim though, considering Benda György and Fejes Balázs to be reliable sources.

Here are two more photos from 2000 of old trams in Budapest. Probably the only photos I have of these machines that I rode so often but never properly photographed, as that would have been "a waste of film". I never had the heart to tell my parents that film is not exclusively reserved for standing in front of a monument with a fake smile during a vacation. Oh well.
