Amazing walkthrough I like how you paint skin. How do you manage to blend it so that it looks like actual skin? I'm still learning myself how to paint skin naturally.

God bless you!! That tutorial was worth a million bucks! It not only covers digital art techniques, it also points out how very important it is to have a fundamental knowledge of traditional art and painting.

I'm going back to the basics from now on! No amount of technology, digital or otherwise will ever replace true talent and hard work!

Thank you for this piece of inspiration. May your fountain never run dry!

you're artwork is absolutely amazing! I am comletely facinated with computer painting right now and trying to figure out how it all works. I have a few questions that I've just been DYING to ask someone, and since you said you were willing to answer questions, here they are.

1)What is it with digital hair? I find it so difficult to capture through digital painting the detail I see and can capture with a regular pencil. How do you do it?

2)I asume you're using photoshop (as it seems most people are...) what type? I have essentials, but I'm sure that I'm probably missing some very useful tools. Also, do you know if it matters what type of wacom you use?

3)could you go over the cloak pattern thing again? Did you just select it, or was that all hand done? It's amazing either way, but I would love to figure out how in the world you did that.

Thank you!

~Nichole~

shideh In reply to Dragonblade99 [2010-03-31 22:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Hello Nichole, and thank you!

1) The trick is to change the size of the brush when you paint digitally. It helps to use a thick brush to start with to block in the basic colors and shapes, and then move towards a smaller brush when painting in the details. I do have a great tutorial on this to recommend you: [link] It's a simple and clear one.

2)I use both Photoshop and Painter when I create a digital work. As for Photoshop I have version 6.0 and for Painter I have the most basic version - even without layer function. I haven't worked in PS Essentials myself, but I don't think that there are any super-important functions you are missing out on. One good thing to remember is that it isn't the program/medium that makes artworks good, it's the artist. Meaning that whichever program you use - you can get really good at it and create wonderful works of art with your imagination

I don't think that the Wacom type matters much either. Some cheap types might not be as durable and as good at sensing pressure, and some other types might feel smoother to work with. But I think it's a matter of taste.

3)And lastly, about the pattern. To do this you need to use Layers - do you have that function in Essentials by the way?
*Paste the pattern you want to use on a separate layer above the area you want to add it to.
*If you want to you can change the colour and contrast etc of the pattern to make it blend in better or to achieve various effects.
*Lower the opacity of your pattern layer (to around 20% works quite well)
*set the layer blending mode to overlay - this will make the pattern blend together nicely with whatever is beneath it.

I hope this cleared up things for you? Feel free to ask again if you want to know more.

~Jennie

Dragonblade99 In reply to shideh [2010-04-22 22:38:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that helps a lot. In answer to your question, yes: essentials does have a layers function... (I think I would go crazy if it didn't! ) I'm working on a new piece now for the 100 theme challenge and it's coming along nicely... but eh, it's still rough. I guess I just need a lot of practice as digital medium is still rather new to me.

One last question before I stop bothering you. Where do you find the pattern? Can you just look it up on line or... what? I'm sorry if this seems rather petty, but I've been serching and serching, and I just can't seem to figure out how to use a pattern unless it's done freehand... which I could do, but would rather not, if you know what I mean.

Thanks so much!

You can search for patterns at sites like these: [link] , [link] or just google "free texture".
Look around at dA too, use the search function to find lots of great textures.

I've alway's been confused about layers when putting details onto a flat colored image.
For example, when you started adding lights/shadows on #3 to #4, do you brush on the same layer the lineart sketch is? (I am assuming that the line sketch and the flat colors are on the same layer)

I am confused about layer orders.

shideh In reply to stragan [2010-03-29 18:21:13 +0000 UTC]

Hi, sorry for my very late reply.

At #4 I added the light/shadow on top of the sketch. So on a different layer, one could say Even though I painted basically everything on only one layer.

Specially in that part where you turn the work to grayscale to see the contrast! I would never remember something like that that can be so damn helpful and easy!
